Has anyone tried the backlit one? Is it really helpful?

I have a backlit one and do like it. It is helpful when using it at the oven, which is backlit by the lights in the oven. Without the backlight, I have to pull it out and turn it to just the right angle to catch overhead lighting. Makes it easier to use outside on the grill if it is getting dark, On the sotve, doesn't matter for me.

I love my Thermopen as well!!! I use it for everything - leftovers, cakes, meats, etc My DH gave it to me for Christmas last year - complete with the silicon cover and the leatherette case (and a box of wipes for it) - Of course, I just happened to slip a copy of the catalog in his eating area :-) Great idea for Christmas gifts!! I might snag one for my niece Also Cook's just sent their catalog and have a similar style pen but the accuracy doesn't look quite as good as the Thermopen. Worth every penny! I use mine for everything from making sure chicken is the correct temperature to not over-cooking an almond-meal based pound cake to testing the temperature of the hot water coming out of the kitchen faucet.

That is a good price. When one of my kids lost my original Thermapen I treated myself to the new Kk4 model. I've given the original models as gifts several times. The best feature is how quickly it can read the internal temperature. And they last much longer than the $12 to $18 instant reads thermometers that I used to buy at Bed, Bath and B.

I have dealt directly with Thermapen. They are legitimate.

If by "dealt directly" you mean ordered from Thermoworks directly, yes, I have. Since I've never had a problem with any of the tools I've bought from them, I've never had a reason to talk to their customer service.

Even if a few of the Thermapens are "refurbished," they still carry the full warranty. For the price, I'd buy one, if I needed one. I've already given them as gifts to everyone I know who might have a use for a Thermapen.

Back during turkey cooking season, someone was lamenting the fact that they didn't have an instant read thermometer to check the temp of the turkey. They were reluctant to purchase a Thermapen at full price. I was hopeful they might see this post and plan ahead for the next turkey cooking event.

Greatest stocking stuffer. I try to get colors or patterns that have some significance to the recipient.

I did have to contact their customer service. They were very helpful. I had to send the pen in and it was repaired and returned to me promptly. A guest had tried to close the pen the wrong way, and, in so doing, broke it. It was out of warranty, so I paid for the repair, but it was less expensive than a new one, even with postage. I do have a spare.
