Plumbing question- anyone seen tubing like this used tor pipes?

I don't know if these pics show what I'm talking about. They'll probably come out upside down since I took them with the iPad.

Basically the water outlets which were on the right side of the tub alcove previously are being moved to the left side of the new shower alcove so we can access them more easily in the future (not on an exterior brick wall). When I got home this is what was used. It's slightly flexible but very thick feeling.

FWIW we have very hard water here and am concerned how well these will hold up in the long term. Hadn't seen them used in pics I've looked at.

We are renovating our master bath and a teenager bath. This is exactly what was put in in both bathrooms. Here is before, with the old copper pipes. This is looking into my master shower and through the wall into the boys bathroom. My house is circa 1998.

:) yes, he's already designed at least three amazing gh's out of various materials, but I wanted to find a living person who has already done steel tubing that is not in the rounded bent-pole 'hut' style. It's always better to learn from the 'what-if' and 'wish-I-had' of someone else. He says don't worry about it, but since it is my greenhouse and I will be responsible for running it alone, I don't want to just sit in a lawnchair and watch him do his magic.

I agree with Pools94 that since the deck is gone, removing the copper is in your best interest. Not only will you improve the hydraulic efficiency and thus, reduce the power bill, but often people will let the pH drop and not realize it. A low pH and the hypoclorous acid (Free Chlorine for sanitizing) and copper equals green staining from the copper oxide that forms and precipitates onto the plaster. If the skimmers are copper too, replace them. Given the age of the pool, I would not expect a bond wire to have been installed. Do so. It is a part of the current NEC codes for electrical safety and given the current scope of the work, should and needs to be done. Where are you located? Some parts of California have tiered electrical rates based on the time of day. I have seen people pay as much as $0.34 per kilowatt for day time usage and an Intelliflo can make a huge difference in the amount of power used when compared to a single speed and dual speed motor. Jandy's E-Pump is another alternative that uses the same sealed, permanent magnet motor but their controller. Scott

If you do decide to remove the cast iron, rent a chain breaker. Start at the top and work down. The cast iron is heavy and if it falls on you that wont be good. If the chain wont fit around the pipe than use an angle grinder with a cut off wheel and definitely wear breathing protection and expect a lot of dust. The angle grinder works fine just not as fast as a chain breaker. Reciprocating saw, even diamond blades are worthless on cast. Also, save the scrap cast iron and galvanized so you can take it to the scrap yard, they pay a decent amount for the steel in weight, I got about 150 for the cast I took in. As far as installing drain lines, get a level that shows 1/8", 1/4" pitch so you can get that right. You dont want too much slope otherwise the water moves too fast and waste stops in the pipe. 1/4" slope is the correct one. As far as PEX, once you have a connection past the main line its fairly easy to work with. Sharp bends with 3/4" pex is hard to pull off that should be near your main branch though. Run a 3/4" to a T that goes to your water heater and to a cold manifold, then 3/4" from the water heater to a hot manifold. Figuring out the connections for the main line and for the water heater are the hardest. They have connections with valves too if you want that, I didnt need it. I used cinch clamps with the pex, the tool to use them is about 40 dollars. Did not have a problem with the cinch clamps, once they are on they are on. Pros will want something better cause my arms were real tired after using it all day but it was fine for me to use for a big job only one time. Milwaukee has a pex tool that expands the tube and you insert a connector in there then the tube tightens down on the connector. That isnt cheap though. The install of sinks for this vanity style is problamatic IMO this photo is what the cabinet guy did to shave the side of the drawer box inside the door opening to get the sink to fit. When the counter top people came to install the sinks, one of them (a Ferguson house sink--not the Caxton Kohler we initially wanted to get) was uneven around the edge that mounts to the Crema Marfil we chose for tops... There is larger gap on one side that was pretty visible when you enter the room... the counter top guy caulked to fill in that space white silicone would have been my choice but wasn't offered He did not tell me before he installed the sink-- I am sure they noticed it when they were doing the install but again--like so much of what has happened with the cabinet people--it was more expedient to do the install instead of pointing out the problem and waiting... Also problem with the finish on front edge of vanity-- to be resolved at later date I guess I offered to let them take the sinks to the fabrication shop when the guy was there for the templating and he only took the paper schematic... the hole is not too large--the sink is just uneven... I did not think to check for that when the plumber brought the sinks out-- the plumber certainly didn't check for it because boxes were not opened I don't know if Ferguson's brand is more prone to have quality control issues than Kohler-- just another aspect of our remodel that is not what we expected...

Pex is what it is called used everyday in place of copper. Considerably cheaper and you do not need to worry about ti getting stolen (although in your case inside a renovated, inhabited house should be no worries about that). No need to worry about it at all.

Copper is the gold standard, I have several plumbers in my family. They only use copper in their homes. That being said, PEX is acceptable. Quicker and cheaper. I am old school, I just like copper, it has served me well.

Good point about the rodents- not saying I haven't seen a mouse once or twice, but was more of an issue when I lived where the winters were colder.

Now the scorpions, that's another story. Maybe they're what keeps the mice away.

Thanks for the responses- it's been quite a week and knowing there's someplace to ask for second opinions helps keep the stress level down a bit.

So are there known issues of mice chewing into the PEX lines? My daughter and SIL are about to start on their new home and mentioned using PEX. In the heat of the summer does one material help keep the water in the lines cooler than the other?
