steel tubing question

we are rethinking our gh plans because of the books Steve sent in the mail!

But I have a question that I have not seen addressed anywhere:

Has anyone built a polysheet-covered greenhouse with steel tubing that is not curved?

It would look like a typical "house" shape - with pointed roof and 5 12 slope - about 10 feet inside, 8 feet outside (due to digging down) - probably attached to our rental house facing South.

Looking for plans to possibly build out of used materials rather than purchase a very expensive kit -- mainly because if I don't grow as quickly as I'd like w/ the business, I don't want to feel a lot of pressure in the first three years to work myself into bed in order to justify grants, you know?

Also, I really can't dump yet another responsibility upon my husband who already has as much as he can handle. Yesterday we made a major decision to stop remodel work (going on 8 years now) on the house for a good bit to give him time on the three inventions he is trying to complete for production. (When he succeeds at that, we'll have enough money to build our dreamhouse with a gh and pond inside it anyway)

can he weld? he's an inventor. he could design it in his sleep I think.

:) yes, he's already designed at least three amazing gh's out of various materials, but I wanted to find a living person who has already done steel tubing that is not in the rounded bent-pole 'hut' style. It's always better to learn from the 'what-if' and 'wish-I-had' of someone else.

He says don't worry about it, but since it is my greenhouse and I will be responsible for running it alone, I don't want to just sit in a lawnchair and watch him do his magic.

Wow, thanks! I already tried one of those, but both of the other 2 had something that I think will work. They each had the same tube, but the price at one place was 4 times the price at the other place.

Under the IRC you can plumb the entire gas system with CSST if locally approved. you can also run natural gas with copper tubing providing the gas is certified to contain equal to or less than 0.3 grains of hydrogen sulfide per 100cu/ft of gas. gas lines run under a slab must be sleeved and the sleeve must be sealed on the inside end and vented to atmosphere on the outdoor end. All copper lines run under a slab must be continuous roll pipe or all joints must be "brazed". (No soldeer or mechanical joints under slab).

Thanks Bruce. Your comment was helpful. It gave me a hint to look into the kind of fitting I have there and it seems it is a push fitting like here:https://www.lowes.com/pd/BrassCraft-1-2-in-x-3-8-in-dia-90-Degree-Male-Elbow-Push-Fitting/50284269 But I noticed a surprising thing today. Yesterday night I had shut down the water supply under the sink and confirmed that no water was flowing from the regular tap and filter tap. But today morning when I checked, water is again flowing out from both the taps normally without changing the supply knob and water is not leaking from the airgap hole also. So, not sure what's going on. But it doesn't make sense. I guess, I will not touch the drain tube for now until the leak starts again. Thanks.

Joseph - just curious - how much support does the apron provide? I ask because when I posted my plan people seemed to discount the apron as a support (I assume, it was never discussed as part of the support plan). I had approximately 6.5’ length of 15” overhang with an apron attached to a cabinet at one end and a leg at the other and everyone said I needed steel. Just trying to understand the difference. Maybe no one noticed the apron on the plan, I didn’t question it because I didn’t think an apron provided real support.

I would almost bet that the curved design allows manufacturers to sell one product to a wider customer base. Curved pipes would provide better snow-load qualities. Zone 8-9 shouldn't have that worry?

We do, on occasion, get 2-5 feet of snow. It is usually gone in a day or two, but on two occasions since 1997 we've had 4-6 feet that stayed for several weeks.

W/ a 5 12 pitch, wouldn't it slide off?
