Is Webroot a good virus protection?

Which protection do you think works the best to protect the computer?

When it comes to a antivirus, the opinions of others whether good or bad are essentially meaningless because their experience will never be the same as YOUR experience. Any paid antivirus-even the most expensive-will offer you a free trial in the hope that you will decide to buy. Take advantage of that and decide for yourself. Even if you find a product that offers "good virus protection", you may decide that you don't like the interface-the features it has-the way it works. You may have to try more than one before finding one that you like but it will be time well spent, especially if you are paying for the product.

I have use AVAST free for so many years on multiple computers. I have not been virused for as long as I can remember. I had used AVG for many years until they started getting too complicated. I would recommend either of these. There is no reason to pay for Anti-virus.

the fake antivirus infections do indeed put a shield in your taskbar that look quite similar to the real windows shield and some legit AV programs shields. I would recommend going to this other forum and tell them exactly what you have told us here and they will help you run some other scans to see what is still lurking, it is rare to get rid of these infections easily. You will need to register then start a thread in the area I link you to, it would be helpful if you then put a link from this thread in your post there so everything is in one post. I haven't used WW in years (Win98 and still have it out on the system in the garage) and have up to recently used ASC (stopped because of the pirating software claim). In my experience they are arguably of the same efficiency in cleaning. In fact, I found ASC's cleaning capability on a current par with CCleaner. I've always done some non-scientific efficiency tests for system cleaning utilities and found none of them to be 100%. I would rate the three of them at 98%. I guarantee if you run any one of them and then run the another you would find some very minor leftovers. Unless you use some other available features of ASC or are emotionally attached to it, I would recommend you save your money and use CC. DA

My impressions are based on a limited number of contacts with tech support, but I sense that tech support overseas is harder to communicate with. Part of it is language, part is culture. Overseas tech support seems almost autometronic. They seem to have a script they work from, and if your problem doesn't fit one of their scripts, they can't help. When I asked for help in fixing the problem myself, the only reply he gave me was to ask me to let them take over my computer. And he had no response when I said no. He didn't seem to understand why I refused. And my comment, "There is no way on God's green earth I am giving you access to my computer," didn't resonate with him. This happened on the heels of another tech support call involving my cell phone company. I received an odd e-mail out of the blue from my phone provider that they were going to stop my phone service on a certain date, and when I called, I was told by someone in tech support that they were no longer going to accept payment by PayPal. So I went in to my account to change to another payment method and found myself locked out. I called for help, and they couldn't get into my account. The tech support guy from the phone provider wanted the password for my Paypal account. I refused. And he didn't seem to understand why I would not give it to him. I think someone living in the US would understand this sensitivity on the part of the customer.

Thanks for your help. The problem still exists but I got by my hurdle, I hope. It started when I needed to return a form that required my clarity. I reduced Word print to an 8 font. From Word I was able to print two lines of identification data. I then cut the that data from the printed sheet. I pasted that data in an area of the form that needed my clarification. Then I printed a copy of the edited form. Then I scanned that copy to Desktop in order to have a Desktop file. Then I returned the Desktop edited form to the sender via email. Sure sounds like a lot of trouble, doesn't it. Thanks for reading this. I did this explanation more for me. Hope I was too boring. But I was being pushed to get it done. It is very apparent that I have edited the form that was sent to me. I'm not trying to fool anyone. I just need to make sure the sender and I are on the same track. Its been 24 hours and I've not heard back from the sender. I think it is okay. I'm pretty slow about studying things. I need to reread what you said and pursue the printing issue of HP and/or Picasa. Thanks again.

I am currently using Avast Free and so far have had no problems with it, but on March I am putting Kaspersky Pure 3.0 in all of my computers. I got a really good deal for it and liked what they have. Hopefully I will be satisfied with it. Just remember if you have another antivirus software program already on your computer, be sure and remove it all before installing another antivirus program.

To answer your question: Web-root is rated pretty good too.

I'd recommend Avast as well.
AntiVir is also good. It used to popup nag screens for the pay version, but they stopped doing that last year. It usually scores near the top, and was easy to use.
AVG is the other popular free one, but it used to make for a heavier load on the system.

You can check one of the independent testing labs like av-test.org - where Avast does well - but the first place spot seems to be tough to keep one year to the next.

I also don't think it's necessary to pay for an antivirus program. If you know what you're doing and are careful, you don't really need one actually, but for the avg user it's probably a good idea.
The problem is, the nastiest stuff out there is ahead of antivirus detection, so you need to stay ever vigilant with your clicks.
