Wooden, pear-shaped candleholder: antique or shabby chic?

Any idea on the age of this (apparently) wooden candlestick? Don't know if it is actually old or just shabby chic-ed. Shaft is 19 inches tall from base to candleholder rim. Base is 5.75 inches across. Texture of the paint appears rough, almost tar-like.

Love the first pattern, Jan. Yes, yes and yes. I am very drawn to old pieces. I only have a few "new" pieces and they have patina. Made to look old things. I only buy vintage or antique accessories. I use family things when/where I can. Mom has told me to come go through a few drawers - can't wait. It was confirmed by an astrologist that I have an "old soul." I think that's part of the reason, if not the reason, I am drawn to things with history. I'm a big toucher when shopping antiques. I love running my hand across the top of something or picking it up for closer inspection. I often wonder who owned items before me and what it has witnessed. Imagine my horror of being raised by a furniture store family! lol I started buying old pieces at 21yo and had a few older family things in my room as a teenager. The home I was born into was 50s Danish, but I loved visiting my 90yo next door neighbor's home and was fascinated by her antiques. We moved to an English Tudor when I was 10yo and it fit my decorating personality. I like English things, but don't try to decorate in English. Def. eclectic, to fit what I am drawn to and feel good around. I love the coolness of Swedish, but would never decorate my home that way. I need warm colors/items. Texture is a must. I'm a very visual person. Could never live in a modern home (I do enjoy seeing) but would not be comfortable in one on a daily basis. Touches of French are okay, but I'm not into ornate pieces from any style.

It's a lovely dresser and would work well as a vanity, so long as you don't mind going without cabinet storage. Someone on the board has a similar vanity in her bathroom - my3dogs, maybe? Is it tall enough to have a drop in sink? It looks like it is. You'll lose the use of the top drawer but the two bottom drawers look large enough to store TP, towels, products, etc. We converted a small dresser to a vanity for our powder room. It was only 30" tall so I used a vessel sink. DH was able to convert the top drawer to accommodate the plumbing and still allow some storage, and it also has a 2-door cabinet below. I think it would be lovely with just the wood top but I'm not sure how durable. Our vanity has a stained wood top and I'm always cleaning up water after guests leave. A marble top with either a chrome or brushed nickel faucet would be very pretty.

I found this one to be quite funny. This guy hopefully didn't quit his day job to become a salesman!! Really, really ugly coffee table - $5 (77065 Cy Fair) Okay, this coffee table is ugly. It's REALLY ugly. I can't even believe I'm trying to sell it, it's so ugly. But it's also VERY sturdy. You can sit on it without even worrying about it collapsing beneath you. It'd be really a great thing for someone who just needs SOMETHING to put a big TV on, who wants to bedazzle furniture, or who doesn't want to send the "good" old coffee table to college with her son. I mean, hey, we all need some utility furniture at one time or another, right? Maybe you even want it to refinish it and sell it for megabucks... I promise I won't judge you for buying it if you won't judge me for having it to sell in the first place!We will be home tonight (Sunday) between 6 and 8 if you want to come see it. What is the difference between cottage and country?

I think there is definitely a fine line between country and cottage. I also think beadboard has now crossed over and is traditional, country, cottage, vintage, etc. I guess beadboard could be considered timeless and looks good in almost any design scheme, except super modern. When I think cottage, I see images of more pastel colors than with country. I also see more delicate flowers and painted furnishings. Now mind you, this is in my mind, it's nothing scientific. LOL In my new house I'm seeing traditional country for living area, country with modern accents for master bed and bath, old New Orleans for guest bath, cottage for guest bedroom, traditional for kitchen, vintage/traditional for foyer and traditional for office. In realizing my confusion for design and need to have all designs in one house, I suppose I won't be winning any design awards anytime soon. LOL In a year we can look back and see if I was able to pull all of this off in one house. HA!

I don't know anything about your candle stick. The finish on the column is similar to that I have seen on antique clocks.

There is a bad seasoning crack in the wood of the upper bulbous part. Cracking like this can be reduced if the wood has been saturated with linseed oil. I have a bare wood carving of a bear sitting on my fireplace hearth, It made of poplar. The carver advised me to keep applying linseed oil until it would not absorb any more. That was a messy process and I had to keep the little bear sittin on something to keep from staining the hearth. After about 6 months, it dried completely and has not cracked. That was 35 years ago. The bear is carved out of a solid piece of wood about12 inches in diameter.

Thanks for your input and the advice on linseed oil. Hoping that will not cause issues with the paint/finish, though I would rather have to repaint it than see it slowly fall apart.

Another peculiar feature: See the "stem" of the pear "pushing" against the bottom of the drip plate? It seems that the drip plate is deliberately slanted. Hoping that someone reading this might recognize that as a particular style feature. As in "Oh yes, that is reminiscent of the xxxx-xxxx style, done in xxth decade of the xxth century." I can be accused of grasping at straws with that hope, but it has been my experience that each of us knows at least one little fact that the most scholarly expert does not.

The clock comparison is interesting too. Maybe I should start researching "antique finishes" or the like.
