I get birds hitting windows, too. And some birds are worse than others - house sparrows, for example, never hit the windows, but I've picked up lots of dead Cedar Waxwings that hit windows on the house and the garage. Big birds, like crows, blue jays, small hawks, rarely hit but those little redpolls hit frequently. I think the best method to curb the window hits while still inviting birds is to have some branches in front of the window for them to swoop in and perch on - like maybe a few tall willow or dogwood branches firmly pushed in the ground below the window, or fashion a light twig trellis. Or grow a small tree in front of the window. One year I had tall castor bean plants growing in front of the window - awesome view of the birds pirched in the plants and no window hits.

Hi everyone....thanks again for the responses. I'm sad to say that the Quaker parrot did not survive. It died on it's own at the avian clinic this evening after incubation care and other vet stuff. I'm really bummed. :( Apparently, it had major internal injuries and some of the swelling put pressure on the spine which caused the paralysis. They think it flew into the side of a building or something - but not recently...several days ago. The vet also confirmed it was actually a wild parrot and NOT a pet/tamed parrot. The extent of its injuries is what made it seem so docile and tame. The eyes and feet indicate tame or wild (...you probably already know this Manature) - dark eyes/feet are wild parrot indicators. I know I tried and so did the others to help (the Florida West Coast Avian Society rescue group tried and the vet clinic). It just sucks sometimes that you can't save them all no matter what you do. :( Anyway, this is the name of the group that will do parrot rescue and have a bird focus. Some birds will find their way into the bird netting. Most will be deterred. At least, that has been my experience. I found a little bird (vireo?) caught up in the netting but was able to release him. Netting is a good way to go for small tree, but it's tough to wrap around a big tree. I still haven't tried "scare tape", and response to my queries have yielded mixed results. In sum, it seems to work while it works, but the birds seem to catch on. RB

I have a 4 feeder pole system set up near a picture window that is very popular with birds because it is in a protected cove, near bushes, birdbath and flowers... I had some bird strikes to the window so I moved the pole away several more feet and strung up some fishing lines with feathers attached at 6' intervals to make the birds aware of the window... that didn't work... course those black stickers of hawks or owls don't work either... so, last month, I bought some film called CollidEscape and put that on the outside of the window and I have not had one strike since. It really works and it cuts down on UV coming into the house, too. I just wanted to make folks aware of this product; I do not work for the compnay or anything but it has really helped my pine siskins who are migrating. You can see outside because it is perforated with tiny holes and it is as if you are looking through a window screen. But it looks white if you look from outside in.
