Early 2014 Blueberry Report/Evaluations
Comments (9)My blueberries are still rather small and less productive, but this year they turned a corner and started growing. I probably had about 8 pints total from 20 plants but considering I didn't get a half pint last year, I was happy. In a nutshell, I fixed a drainage problem from my original planting, sprayed all of the plants with lime sulfur to kill off fungal diseases, and used elemental sulfur to balance the pH. Those three changes have allowed my plants to almost double in size this year and start thriving instead of just surviving. All of the my blueberry plants (except Sweetcrisp) made it through this last very cold winter without any damage. Even my two rabbiteye plants (Tifblue) survived unharmed and have fruited. The only blueberry with any cold damage was the Sweetcrisp, which resulted in no fruit but both Sweetcrisp plants continue to grow at a fast rate in their pots. The flavor of the various blueberries was good overall but the Kabluey did have the consistently best-flavored berries. I believe it must be at least a partial southern highbush if not a full southern high bush because it has a different growth pattern and appearance from the other blueberry plants. Kabluey (very good flavor) Reka Duke Blueray Rubel Patriot (notably good flavor) Bluejay Bluecrop Toro ((notably good flavor) Pink Lemonade (not yet ripened) Tifblue (not yet ripened) Bonus - (did not fruit) Sweetcrisp (did not fruit)...See MorePics from early December
Comments (10)yes, I'm thinking of a few for convention. I think Lollipop Kid is a semi but someone will have to confirm it for sure. I like the bloom and foliage. I *love* the foliage on Rob's Outer Orbit..... and I love the foliage on my Trinket Terrific but it doesn't have symmetry like outer orbit. I'm going in 2 weeks to speak to a Garden Club in another state. It's a group of about 25 women who want to learn about african violets. They are paying me to come do the program and I plan to take the extra plants (not Optimara space babies) that I have to sell. This will hopefully reduce my collection so that I can focus on growing for show/convention. Dora...See MoreShow us Your Landscape - A photo Thread - December 2014
Comments (19)For the first time, my Helleborus niger aka Christmas Rose are blooming at Christmas My Jasminum nudiflorum isn't blooming yet, but I gave a rooted cutting to a friend, and hers is in flower now: This little bulb is blooming in one of the street-side gardens in downtown Falmouth - not sure what it is The winter heath is in bloom, I just haven't gotten any photos yet, mainly because the leaf clean-up isn't finished - still lots of leaves on my big sweet gum....See MoreDecember 2014 Quilting/Sewing Goals
Comments (6)My biggest goal for this month is to clean my sewing room! It looks like a cyclone went through and fabric is everywhere. I am also still sorting boxes of "treasures" a friend gave me. His wife died about 5 years ago and he is finally sorting out her crafty stuff. Not much quilting stuff, but 2 large tubs full of cross stitch stuff. I am going to pass most of it along - it is amazing that one of the large tubs is almost full of the thread! Big bucks there. If I get time, I will try to sandwich a UFO, but cleaning is my only real goal! Sue...See Moremyamberdog
