Red Robin has outgrown my Aerogarden, prune it?

Or move it?

I have extended the lights as high as I can, about 14". The plant has grown up in to and above the lights and is starting to bloom.

Should, could I prune it?

I could move it to my homemade hydroponics bucket or to a regular pot under some different lights.

Help?

Do you have a sunny windowsill? Failing that, is it warm enough there to put it outside during the day?

I'd hate to prune off all the blossoms!!!!

Another thought. Yes - a different light would work if you can rig it up. I have one of those el cheapo stainless fixtures (with a clip) that can hold a single grow light.

First, toss the Jerry Baker book out the window - much of what it contains is nonsense and in some cases, the "concoctions" can actually be detrimental to the plants and soil health. Weather has a great deal to do plant health as do common gardening practices. And I do agree that many plant disease issues are very cyclical in nature - some years worse than others. Plant diseases are a fact of life. Some are or can become critical to the plant's survival - a great many more are more cosmetic than not and do not necessarily require our intervention. The rust appearing on your amelanchier is of the latter - it is disfiguring but but not a fatal condition. Dormant spraying with an appropriate fungicide, removal of any possible host plants (junipers) and practicing good garden sanitation will go far to curb this issue. If your garden consistently presents a lot of disease problems, then it is probably prudent to consider eliminating or replacing those plants that persist in presenting these problems. There are many very disease resistant varieties of most plants available on the market. The dogwood is a prime example. Cornus florida, the eastern flowering dogwood, is very prone to a number of fungal diseases, primarily anthracnose, which can be fatal. But there are other species and hybrids that are anthracnose-resistant and these should be planted instead where this is an issue. I'd also look to overall garden conditions as well. Building a healthy soil, practicing good garden sanitation and maintenance, observing correct watering and fertilizing practices and proper plant siting will all go far to reduce or even eliminate many disease issues.

You are right Ken... I will just have to now admire the tree that I planted in a small yard! It is SO magestic and the birds love it year round- esp. the ravens/crows in the very tip top!! Can a young cedar be clipped back on the tips though to form it before the limb wood gets too big? Also, my neighbor claims the pollen aggrevates his allergies but I thought since this tree puts out cones it must be a female- not a male which would produce the pollen/allergy ... am I correct?

Hello. We own a large farm with many different species of plants, trees & shrubs. A few years ago we were donated about 30 red tip photinias. And I've noticed some things very interesting that's told me a lot about this species. 20 of the ones we recieved were planted in full sun in well drained soil. And they look awful. About like yours or worse really. They have barely grown. And are clinging to life. The other 10 were planted in an area of about full shade in acidic well drained soil. They are almost completely shaded from the sun about 80% of each day. Then partial shade the rest of the day. The difference is amazing. These 10 are gorgeous, healthy, & have grown vigorously. Seem perfectly healthy and have shown zero signs of problems. It's amazing to see the difference between these growing in 2 different areas. Other than the shade & acidity. The composition of the soil is the same. We did this as a test because the planting instructions stated partial shade. And what a difference. I'd expected the others would do better than they have. But we're relocating the other 20 to this site to save their lives. I'll post an update of their progress. Because they're not going to make it in their current location. Fungus or Root rot does not seem to be a factor in our situation. Look at the pictures. These were both identical when planted 2 seasons ago. One group hasnt grown at all. And are almost dead. The other group has more than doubled in size. And are gorgeous. I hope this helps future planters. Thanks.

Too cold to go outside. We have a lot of winter left here.

I can't rig another light overhead unless I move it out of the aerogarden. I'm afraid it will cause it to drop the blooms.

It does get morning sun until about 10 AM.

I have 3 more in regular potting soil growing under lights in a different room, and 2 in a sunny window at work, but they aren't blooming yet.

Could you VERY carefully re-pot it and take it to work? (Putting a bag over it so as not to get it chilled en route).

I know you are nervous about it dropping blooms, but it might work if you have another pot about the same size as the aero garden.

I'm in NC and my indoor plants get morning sun too. I pop them outside on the sheltered deck when it isn't raining or very cold out, and they are hanging in.

I remembered that I had a magnifying glass that clamps on to a desk and/or counter with a florescent light in it. I used to use when working on computers as a side job.

It is very flexible and tall so I figured it might work.

I dug it out and clamped it to the counter, then pulled the tom out to the side of the other lights.

I put it an inch or so away from the top, I have had to move it up twice, so it's still growing skyward.

So far it seems happy!

An update, for all, but especially Linda,

The blooms hadn't started opening up under the magnifying glass thingy after a week. So I'm thinking wrong color or weak light.

So..... I bought one of those el cheapo stainless fixtures (with a clip) yesterday, per Linda's suggestion.

I attached it to the magnifying glass thingy for an easy fix. I put a 1100 lumen CFL bulb in it.

I walked by 2 hours later and the blooms had opened all of the way up!

I flicked them with my finger and I could see the pollen dust flying!

I might have little toms when I get home today! LOL

I have aerogarden too. You could try to detach the arm that holds the light and hang it higher. Bought LED light this year so no more height problems. I just use the Aerogarden for seedlings before the LED light gets them.
