Growing Citrus in Las Vegas
Comments (10)Ive had my lemon tree in my back yard for 5 years now, It does well here, Its about 25' tall and this year I have about 200 lemons it produced for me, The only thing is where my tree is the wind does not hit it to bad. I found that when the flowers are on it and a strong wind vomes it blows the flower off, there goes my fruit. I am looking for advise about trimming the tree this year it has grown unbeliveable this year and must be cut back. The only thing I do with it is water it like any other plant and I put in the vitiam spikes in the grown at winter time it seems to love the spikes for citrus trees. good luck with your lemon tree...See MoreRe-post: Las Vegas Garden assignment
Comments (15)Hiya, Looks like you really have your work cut out for you. It might be really helpful to visit some established gardens in Vegas to learn more about what really works down there. I visited the Gardens at the Springs Preserve when I was at a Landscape Confrence 4 years ago, and have remained on their mailing list. I can't belive the scope of classes, tours and demonstartions they offer, it's absolutely wild! It is under 4 acres and is very walkable, and everything is well i.d'd Looks like it has been established at least 10-12 years, so you can see some nice, fairly mature specimens. I believe it is sponsored by the SNWA(S. Nevada Water Authority.) Reno needs to catch up I'm afraid; we have a botanical garden at Rancho San Rafael park, but its pretty feeble by comparison. Larger than its Vegas sibling, but less info is disseminated.Maybe things will change w/ the new director Bill Carlos who recently came aboard. Here is a link to the Gardens at the Springs Preserve: http://www.springspreserve.org/html/gardens_visitor_information.html I don't know what the topography + architecture is like at your parents new house (probably a stucco ranch, flat as a pancake?) but you might want to introduce some mounding with some rocks/boulders. Quite a few interesting gropundcover and perennial plants will enjoy growing in this type of situation, plus it makes it easier for your folks in that they don't have to bend + kneel so much. Also investigate container gardening (on a separate drip zone). I saw some really cool planters in Vegas, that thrived in a patio setting. Some were very elaborate and had ornamnetal grasses combined with different annuals that trailed out of the pots.Very luscious! Good luck in your gardening adventures down south! Comments (3)It must be hard to come from cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter San Diego to Las Vegas. Not only for you but also plants which find our weather, soil and water tough. I don't think astilbes stand a chance here but there are so many plants that actually like it here and would appreciate a little shade from our brutal sun. Salvia coccinea(red) would be a good choice and our Salvia farinacea(blue) hasn't stopped blooming all summer in the shadiest spot in our yard. Our guara lindheimeria(white) has bloomed nonstop despite being swallowed up by that thug Salvia clevlandii. Ruellia(purple) is a nonstop performer that appreciates some shade but it can be quite invasive so if this might be a problem then don't get it. Also a lot of succulents would appreciate some shade even though they don't flower much and would be like bringing San Diego here. Good luck, Maria...See MoreWill Magnolia trees grow in Las Vegas
Comments (5)Yes they will. I live in an area where mid summer temps can get to 110 degrees farenheight. You do have to ensure heavy watering when first planting and continuous watering even after being established.
