Any other KY daylily gardeners on here?

Hi, I am a new poster but I am not new to daylilies. I have grown them almost 10 yrs now. My favorites are UFs and the fancy ruffled ones. I have downsized to about 240 cultivars now.

The picture is a new one for me. David Likes It a Lot from

Thank you, I just planted it in September so I am excited to see it bloom for the first time this year. I also grow his Ashton's Giggles which I love! I don't have a good pic of it tho.

Even though Auteck and Formicburn are saying things that are completely opposite, they both have some valid points. The picture could be showing that the tall fescue wasn't able to develop deep roots, so it is more drought stressed. It could also be showing that tall fescue doesn't deal well with dull mower blades. Tall fescue is particularly prone to tearing from dull mower blades. Tall fescue doesn't have the deepest root system of all cool season grasses (maybe it has the deepest root system of the cool season grasses used for lawns, but not the deepest of all cool season grasses). Tall fescue roots go down a maximum of 3 or 4 feet. Western wheatgrass roots go down more than 10 feet and so much of the root mass is deep that it doesn't even benefit much from water that only reaches the top foot of soil. If tall fescue is able to develop a deep root system, it uses somewhere between 10 and 30 percent less water than KBG. In my opinion, that's not a huge water savings in my opinion. K31 tall fescue probably has deeper roots than other tall fescues, but it's an unimproved pasture grass and (in my opinion) it doesn't look good in a lawn. If tall fescue can't develop deep roots, it can actually require more water than KBG. That coul dbe what we're seeing in the picture Auteck posted. Another thing to note is that KBG does better at snapping out of dormancy than tall fescue does. And if some of the grass dies, KBG does a better job of filling in the bare spots. Most tall fescue varieties are bunch grasses, although some newer varieties are weakly rhizomatous. I think KBG has a bad rap regarding water use. It can use more water than some of the alternatives, but unless you plan to go to extreme measures (as I have) and plant native grasses, if you water correctly, you won't see a lot of difference in water usage between KBG and tall fescue. I'm transitioning to a lawn of western and streambank wheatgrass, and will use about 1/4 the water that KBG uses. One point on which I know Auteck disagrees with me is mowing height. We've already agreed to disagree on that point. I think his lawn would be even more drought tolerant if he'd raise the mower deck. Taller grass is able to develop deeper roots. To get back to the original question, I'm pretty sure that Kentucky Bluegrass would do well in the state whose name it bears. There's a reason it's called that, after all.

Just a lovely garden, thanks for posting your pics. I have a red that makes a huge clump and it is getting ready to bloom. I don't know what it is because the tag is buried in the clump LOL I never removed it LOL Think I got it from Marietas a few years back. I will post pictures when it blooms. Dot

ngrahm, thanks and I hear ya about that lily, I have a few planted here and there and only a few have bloomed this summer, but worth the wait. ha I went out and took another photo of the pink one.about 8:15 here in okc... still looking great, now if only we could check bud count and branching of the list, alas.. hee hee. I have been trying to cross this with Siloam Goliath with some difficulty but thought that'd be a fun cross.

Is that lavender pink or clear pink? I just love the beautiful green throat and the gold edging. So pretty!

It is hopefully a true clear pink. I love green throats too. I have began to look for them in the new ones that I am adding.

I love Oklahoma now, but I still have a great fondness for my hometown state, Kentucky. Still watch basketball finales if Kentucky/Louisville plays (and I'm not a sports fan at all)......Welcome to this forum. Your daylily is beautiful. I especially fond of pinks and yours is a dandy......Maryl

I am in Ky, near Lexington. I've been collecting daylilies since around 1967, about 12 years old. My collection didn't start really growing a lot until around 1999 when my wife & I finally had a place with a yard.
There is another KY poster, Nancy. People don't check the forum as much in the winter, so she may not see your post.

I belonged to the Lexington club a few years back when my daughter lived there.

I am on the computer more in the winter. I love looking at my daylily pictures and planning what I need to do before Spring.

I'm in southern KY, I don't have a huge collection, but I love every one of them! I especially love the UFs & large round heavily ruffled ones, but frankly, there's hardly any I don't like:)

Thank you for the welcome to the Gardenweb dl forum! I am a UK Wildcat fan too. When my 2 oldest girls attended college there I always intended to donate a few to the State arboretum..

It is worth the time!

I live in KY and went to UK, so I'm a Cats fan as well. I'm a little late to the party, but I grow some daylilies...though not nearly as many as you. I typically enjoy the daylilies that have a long bloom season. Rosy Returns, Apricot Sparkles, Stella and Ruby Stella are my favorite. I also grow a few others like Bertie Ferris (no rebloom), and Plum Perfect (very slow grower). Here is a picture of Apricot Sparkles.
