Planting one year old fig trees in the gound

I live on the coastal end of NC,zone 8a.
My questions are , would it be best to grow the fig trees in pots to there second year before I plant them in the ground?
Or can I plant the fig trees in the ground as soon as it warms up this spring, after growing in pots 6 months?

do you know what cultivar it is? I don't see why you couldn't plant right now inground. but if you're not comfortable with that, then in early spring would be fine for sure.

Would be nice to know what cultivar it is as some of those little trees turn out to be huge and placement becomes an issue. I grow some in pots because on the first try they did not do well inground and I also grow a couple of cultivars inground. One is a monster (Celeste) another, not so much, Kadota, which is still small and young. Don't know if that is its nature or if placement wasn't best.

Just know that research goes a long way towards happy planting AND happy plant.

You could do either, but I prefer dormant planting. For you, that would mean Jan -Feb.

I got my fig tree like this: My cousin hacked a woody piece off the base of his tree in Nov. i brought it home in my suitcase, across the country. I heeled it in in a basket of old dirt. Nothing happened for a year and a half. I was reluctant to give up...it was a sentimental tree, and my brother took his piece home to Florida and had figs already! Finally I gave up and took the stick out of the basket to see if it had any roots and it did not. I tossed it back in and got around to dumping it the next week, only my stick had a LEAF. This year I have a FIG. And I'm excited in a way that is kinda unnatural. One and a half YEARS.

Assuming that it is a common fig, and a variety that will ripen figs in your climate....yes. Search this forum and especially the Figs 4 Fun Forum for some instructions on how to prune a fig tree for better production. Threads by "ascpete" will show diagrams. A 50+ year old fig tree that might have been neglected, can certainly be made to bear figs, and can be pruned back and be trained to produce figs that can be picked without using a ladder. It may take a few years to get that tree under control, but it can be done easily. Good luck. Post some photos if you can. Frank

Hi Rossello, Because the tree in the wooden barrel is extremely heavy I keep it all summer on a heavy duty 4-wheels that you may see a little on the picture. Then I made me a tubing with 2 "S" handles bolted on and when the time comes to go in my garage I just hook the handle on the 4 wheeler and wheel it in, once every few years I put new wheels on because staying outside they deteriorate. It is quite easy but I am now in the 70's and is very difficult to root prune, I am also limited to weights I can lift. I have 2 smaller ones of different type that will be sufficient. I have hardy Chicago,LSU purple,blue Celeste and Texas everbearing.
Growing area will support more fig trees than we have fingers and toes.

After all the reading I have done,it seems to be a million and one way to grow a fig tree.

I need to stop worrying,plant the fig trees after danger of frost has passed,hope for the best.

Planting dormant is a good idea because you can straighten the roots out without shocking new growth.

You can do either but keep in mind if it goes below 17 degrees they will be badly damaged. Perhaps down to the ground. This will set them back. Most years we get a back door cold front in January. Last year went down to 9 in Newport. Protect them for 3 years with insulation. Plant after mid April. Remove all figs the first year or 2. Avoid Nematode importation. Do not cultivate. Mulch with 6 inches of pine needles. Water deeply weekly the first year. Share figs with me in 3 years! :)
