OT- We Lost a Dear Friend Today
Comments (54)I just found this thread again. Reminded of the pain of losing our sweet Libby, we found ourselves having to say goodbye to another beloved pet just last week. Our precious Boo Boo Kitty made her way to Rainbow Bridge following a year of unexplained weight loss and finally a rare cancer diagnosis 6 months ago. She was a rescue kitty we welcomed to our home in the Fall of 1993. We don't know exactly how old she was when we got her but at least 6 months at the time. She must have been getting close to 17 years old when she passed. We love all our pets and they are each unique in personality and demeanor, but Boo was such a bright, intuitive, affectionate and totally mischievous little soul that there will never be another like her. Always demanding the center of attention, but in such an adorable fashion that no one could deny her. She was the best companion of my husband, who historically was never a pet lover. Yet his heart was won over within the first moments of her arrival to our home, when Boo immediately crawled onto his big chest, wrapped her paws around his neck and began purring her acceptance of her new family. From that moment they were inseparable and shared a lifelong bond of love and affection, mixed with mutual joy as they practiced the art of "play battle". Boo hiding and pouncing on my husband from all possible angles of attack until he would pin her in his arms, smothering her with hugs. As her battle with cancer caused her body to thin, tire more easily and struggle to control normal functions, she still remained our loving, affectionate, ever present companion who continued to insist on being the focus of our attention. She spent long evenings cuddled in our laps, telling us it was ok to just sit and enjoy our time together, the chores and schedules could wait...our time together was limited and thus more precious. We are so grateful to have had the honor and blessing of sharing our lives with our beautiful Boo. The pain of parting is so sharp and intense, we continue to see her in our minds eye around every corner, in her favorite sunny spots and waking us in the mornings with her soft paws upon our cheeks. As much as it hurts now, the years of shared love and memories make it all worthwhile. Someday we will cross that Rainbow Bridge, warmly greeted and surrounded by our precious companions who wait for us there now. Comments (25)I bake all the bread, rolls, etc that we consume in our home and that way I can better regulate what goes into them. I do eat some bread, but if I wish to drop the excess weight, then I have to be careful. Home baked bread is sooooo tempting, especially hot from the oven and with butter on the counter.. LOL I eat oatmeal with blueberries nearly every day. And I eat fish at least 2-3 times a week. I love sardines, so that can be a meal for me while hubster eats a burger with all the trimmings, french fries and washes it down with a huge glass of milk... then a generous serving of ice cream just before bed... and he is soooooooooooo painfully thin... Gahhhh.. but he is pretty healthy for 82 and that is a blessing.. I think incorporating walking is a huge differnce in how I lose the weight and tone my body.. and I am so completely addicted to walking especially here in these beautiful woods and country roads.. it is to me like paradise.. Trouble with me is that I will set out with the dogs and we will walk 3 or 4 miles out and I sort of tend to forget we gotta walk back that same amount.. More than once hubster has had to come and get me because it got dark out and I still wasn't back.. he worries because of my heart condition.. but I don't.. cuz I know he will come and get me.. Comments (9)My husband passed and I immediately called my friends and asked for help. They picked me up the next day and went with me to make all arrangements having done the same themselves a few months before. I don't know how close you are. Does she have friends & family around who can help her get through the next week, going to the funeral home with her, making arrangements? Did she call you or did somebody else tell you about it? A friend lost an adult child last year. She called me so I knew that it was OK to step up to the plate. I immediately went to her house and made all the phone calls, checking prices and talking with her about it. She couldn't handle it alone. Is there somebody to do that for your friend? If she has somebody helping her with those things you can either ask that person, or just wait until after the service and visit and talk to her and her children. Next thing, buy her some healthy frozen dishes, preferably home made, for her freezer. Some Shepherd's pies or quiches for example. No matter what you do, I think the worst time is the months afterwards. When you offer to help make a suggestion -- drive the kids to their grandmother? Bring a dinner? I'm really tired myself tonight. I'll think about it....See MoreMy friend wants to know if her hostas are OK
Comments (205)Can you talk with your neighbours about the tree? If it makes a difference for your garden I would at least try to find a solution for both parts. Maybe they can still find another place for it as long as it is young...I miss that big tree, it has been here when I moved into the house 35 plus years ago and it will be interesting to see what happens next year. Thank you all for your kind words about that planter. nicholsworth once said that I'm an experimental gardener and that is true in some ways. But mostly I have a sudden idea and I never hesitate to follow my head...I got two new aloe and immediately decided to combine them with my already existing plants. Canada is not well known for succulents :-) Might be the climate that does not really fit for such plants. You could keep them alive with plant lights in winter or let them sleep like hosta. I will try both methods this year. But our winter is not as long as yours..Sansevieria and aloe are definitely ones you could try because they grow inside without problems. I spent this rainy weekend with putting most of my succulents in terracotta pots and I got some kind of plastic tray from our gardener which holds 12 pots and I can water the pots in those trays. So I could arrange them without all those little plates under them and it looks much nicer now....See Moremonarae_gw
