Just for fun, here is my pink gruss and my regular gruss side by side. To me, the regular gruss has a stronger scent.
But they are both gorgeous!

stefanb8,I got the plant in February 2006. I also see only 'Gruss an Aachen' when I look at my Beales' (true) Irene Watts! As to the color difference, anntn6b gave me very important information. Her Nancy Steen's book has black and white photos. Mine has color photos. Maybe the photos in my book were colorized with the automated colorizing programs which anntn6b mentioned in her posting. Jeri, thank you for your interest! And thank you for your information about the Huntington's Teas and Chinas. berndoodle, I felt just the same thing as you mentioned when I first saw the leaves of my TRUE Irene Watts. They are not the leaves of China roses! "Carnation" has China-like leaves. Quite similar to Madame Laurette Messimy's. I got "Carnation" this spring. I also have Madame Laurette Messimy. And I have Archduke Charies which I suppose Irene Watts' pollen parent. I'm going to watch these three varieties closely. Akira

I grow 5 Pink Gruss an Aachen roses. They range in age from 6 years old to about 12 years old. Yes, compared to other roses I've grown, they handle less-sunny conditions very well. The more shade, the more open in plant habit they will be. But they will still bloom fairly well. The one that I have in filtered shade blooms less than the others, but is extremely elegant in its lower and wider spreading habit as it searches/reaches horizontally for sun. Hi! I have Pink Gruss, but she is only a baby in the garden. I usually take cuttings in July or August for successful propagation (my method anyway). If you would like to wait I could send you some, or try to propagate her for you and send her this fall. Maybe we can swap for regular Gruss. Sheri

This, too, comes into the 'For what it's worth' department .... I was just reading Peter Beales 'A Passion for Roses' (published in 2004) and noted the following comment he made in the section on Floribundas - "A few roses are completely timeless, and two of these I must mention here: 'Grüss an Aachen' and its sport 'Pink Grüss an Aachen'. 'Grüss an Aachen' is a superb rose, introduced in 1909, and one of the best cluster-flowered roses ever raised. Its colour is a soft flesh-pink, changing to cream in maturity, and it is fragrant and very free flowering; it is also tidy in habit and perfect for both bedding and group planting, 'Pink Grüss an Aachen' is a much deeper pink but in all other respects exactly the same, and just as charming. I confess to being one of a number of nurserymen who, until recently, have distributed the pink form erroneously as 'Irène Watts', a mistake I regret but have now rectified" So, I wonder where the Beales nursery sourced their 'Irène Watts' stock when they realised that what they had previously sold as that rose was in fact the PGaA? Nice pic, two of my favorite roses. For those considering, regular Gruss can variously show white, apricot, blush, or the same mild salmon that Pink Gruss consistently is. Both are terrific bloomers on a compact, graceful, bushy plant, but susceptible to blackspot.

Those are beautiful!!!!! I love the shape!!!
I had Gruss when I was beginning to grow roses in pots. I hated it, because it was this beige thing, and the roses all looked dirty. Most of my roses (including Gruss) died because of my inexperience with overwintering them. I didn't replace it.
But YOURS are STUNNING!!!
Way to go!!

My Gruss must be the white version. It seems to be lighter than yours. It looks the best in May, when our heat is not so deadly. Here is a May photo from a few years ago.

Kathy, yours is gorgeous too.
My regular gruss can be all over the map as far as color. I think mine is darker right now because it's December in Phoenix and finally gorgeous rose weather.

I have a picture of them side by side also. I am speculating that what I have is not Pink Gruss an Achen because the pink one often has narrower petals towards the centers , can have a button eye , and has more petals ( I counted them) .
I bought my PGaA as Irene Watts. From what I hear no roses in the US sold as Irene Watts are really Irene Watts.
I am not certain about that. My " Irene" plant also seems to have more tea like growth than Gruss. It's more open and airy. To do a better photo study I need more fully opened Gruss blooms.
