Received a mailer packet from American Gardener called a response pack. In it is a DA coupon for 20% off every time you shop till Feb 15th.

I think you will get it if you are on seed catalog mailing lists. Have to look for it. Looks like most junk mail.

I always do a search online for promo codes for wherever I am shopping. A lot of times they work :) Doesn't hurt to try. Words to try are promo codes, offer codes, coupon codes...and then the online store that you are going to be buying from.

@Erasmus YES! Hortico sends good bareroot plants budded on new seedlings (as rootstock) to prevent the spread of virus. Some varieties are bigger than others, but that’s due to the variety’s vigor. Because of their conscientious and transparent policy against spreading virus, Hortico is my preferred source for roses in general, but especially for David Austin roses. 30% of my roses gotten directly from DA-USA have been virused. They will replace them for you, but don’t actively hold their growers accountable for spreading virus, and so the vicious cycle continues indefinitely. I have a suspicion that some of their mother plants are virused, I don’t think it’s possible to find a clean plant of Constance Spry in North America unless it’s been indexed by UC Davis. Even though shipping is higher from Canada, Hortico’s DA’s are $19 each as opposed to DA-USA’s price of $28. I have no affiliation with Hortico, but support and promote them because I like the way they conduct business, and don’t want them to close permanently like Pickering. They’re a family owned mom & pop shop. On the other hand, I personally feel that David Austin, Inc. is rich enough as it is, and abhor their plant patent politics. They are my last resort if I can’t find it somewhere else.

My scepter isle is very upright ! I personally love the fragrance so much . So interesting how we all have different scent reception ! Minshen , here’s my opinions only if I had to choose , I’d pick desdemona however Windermere is gorgeous and should also be added eventually my Charlotte is very upright and nice but I loved the blooms on Vanessa too . Emily bronte is rated by the right roses to be patient with that one . I am no help at all !! I think I’d choose carding mill of the other 3. I hear Ambridge fades fast but I have never had it . I just got a 25% off coupon in the mail directly from David Austin roses. Which is way cool because I've never gotten any before. Thinking of picking out my pink Austin that I've wanted for several years now.

Yes, Seil - me too! I've never gotten a David Austin coupon, but it's enough to make me budge. Particularly since AusNipper is calling my name, literally (to the rest of the world, Heathcliff).

It looks like on David Austin's USA site Munstead Wood is not in the own root selections.
They state own root and bare root grafted are equally good roses-
am I just picky after having the head fall off one of my roses to reveal a ghastly orange rose rearing it's ugly head? 'course, that was a grocery store sale mini rose. That would make David choke on his Earl Grey if he was still with us.
Also I'm wondering if the romance around ordering from Austins in hope the quality is significantly better is worth the shipping instead of just paying 18 at the local nursery ?
Granted the whole selection is dazzling at David Austin

If you can get DA's at a local nursery for $18 go for it! They are $30 and up here. So even with the postage the coupon makes them a good deal. Besides that my local nursery that has DA's always carries the same ones year after year. I can get the ones I want from DA.

Our Idaho and Spokane WA nurseries have the skinny little roses for 18, the nice big pots are thirty.
It seems like what ever decision I make , a few days later I see a better way. Some of my spindly bands did not bloom last summer but grew lots of leaves and thorns the first year. I'm rethinking my approach.

Good growth on bands the first year is important. Most people pinch all the buds off first year anyway to promote more growth. Be patient, they'll bloom!
