Planting roses in groups? Best practices?
Comments (14)We have a small hill located on left side of the front yard which I felt was a prime location for modern roses. It is facing east and could probably have the space large enough for 50 mature HTs. It has a fence at one end that could take at least 5 climbers. Thus, when I realized I had the inclination to grow modern roses, I went to my wife to pitch this brilliant idea. I told her that I wanted to go back to painting as a hobby but my motor skills have left me. But I told her that I could use the hill instead as my canvas and the rose as my medium for this "painting". Further, it is going to a dynamic one, the flushing of the roses will give it movement. Stunned, she thought for a moment, and then she said ok. It has been 8 years since then. I have toiled hard to get to a collection matching the painting in my head. I tried to use 3 roses of the same shade, instead of 3 of the same roses. I had to do this to give me flexibility in facilitating softer transition between colors and still get good definition. Each year, after the 3rd year, my wife would ask when my "painting" will be complete. I always replied, "IÂm close". Yearly kills, removal of under and non- performing plants, wrong color or height etc, makes it an impossible and daunting task. The best compliment I received so far from a buddy was "it must be hard to negotiate between bushes". My good neighbor calls it "roses in steroids". My other neighbor thinks the cumulative scent is too much. So, I continue to work at it until somebody says "you know, that could be a nice painting." Lesson is be brave and have fun....See Moregroup 2 acting like group three pruning
Comments (3)Both..no both your "Barbara Dibley" and "Nelly Moser" are pruning group 2s ..Pruning group 2s are notorious for "wilt" which is probably what happened..this might occur the first couple of years..mind you I said "might"..you just prune the dead vines to the ground and new will appear...fertilize with some nice Rose Fertilizer and make sure and keep them watered..remember that clematis like to have their roots kept moist..I have treated all my pruning group 2s like a pruning group3 the first year in my garden and the reasoning was to allow them to focus on getting a bigger root system..clematis are the "Sleep","Creep" and then "Leap" vines..so they don't come into their own until the 3rd year..they do require patience and buying the biggest rooted clematis in the beginning is key....Hope this helps...Jeanne...See MorePlanting in groups of three
Comments (13)I tended to buy in threes in the past. One is, well, one. Two is a line (unless planted close together to create one bigger one). Three is a group. It is preference, but you have to take into acount that sometimes "one" is a specimen plant that deserves pride of place and adding more to it makes it no longer a specimen. I started out buying three of things because my yard, which is large, has different microclimates. The spot where things did best was where I ultimately moved the other two strugglers or survivors. Now I'm downsizing my gardens, replacing an overabundance of blooming perennials with some shrubs and conifers. It's unlikely I'll buy these things in threes - will have my specimens integrated with old favorites that I can continue to divide instead of buying new....See MorePhotos of your favorite rose plant groupings
Comments (62)Ohh Kristine all three :). What lovely colors. Those would just really look great with every rose color. My only irises were a gift from a neighbor and they are white with yellow. I would love to have something like those you are getting....See MoreAquaEyes 7a NJ
