Charles Lawson rose buds don't open fully

My Charles Lawson rose produces many flower buds but very few of them open fully. Do I need to give it some special food? I feed all my roses in early spring with composted manure and David Austin special food for roses (with some fungi).

This is my only complaint about this rose: the bloom failure is a genetic predisposition and as far as I can tell, no cultivation changes will prevent it. It seems weather plays a role in determining how severe the problem is.

If Trospero says it's genetic then it is. But if you live in a very humid place that could make it even worse. Sometimes roses with high petal counts won't open well in high humidities. The petals are usually thin and fragile and they absorb too much moisture and stick together never opening fully.

Its starting very slowely. A bud here and there scattered around but not enought to be truely noticeable. I think if we don't get some deluge of a rain storm to ruin the blooms then this will be the best spring flush in my yard since I started growing roses afew years ago.

Wow, we just got SPANKED with another microburst...I thought we were gonna catch a tornado that time, for sure! I had to shut down the 'puter and run and close all the windows. In that time I lost my post, I'll try again. Linda, I spoke to Century Oaks Peony Farm about Butterflies in Flight, and they maintain mine cannot be, since BIF are brand-new this year and mine have been here at leastfive years. My nieghbor behind us also has a HUGE bush of these, and I maintain they hav been around here for many years. However, yours 'could' be BIF, although I doubt they would be offered through Wal-Mart their first year. Cecily, here are a couple closer shots of the 'white' one. Sorry the pics are so yellow...it is so dark this morning that I had to use the light and I didn;t correct for color accuracy before uploading. Close enough, though. The outer petals (are they really sepals?) are a pale pink while the rest of the flower is white. The stamens have a lot of red, but no red flecks in the petals.

I didn't like thorny and non-fragrant (to me) Darlow's Enigma when I had it -- and I didn't like Distant Drums when I saw it growing in the BBG, though other folks were mad for it for a while. Most of the others mentioned here I do like, or at least don't mind, including Hot Cocoa, which I actually find rather beautiful. To me Double Delight is beautiful as a cut flower and the fragrance is fantastic. I think almost any rose can be made to look beautiful in the right spot and with the right conditions and companions. I have even reconciled myself to Knockout because it is so cheerful and willing in public plantings. One gets more mellow with age. I now look back with nostalgia on Circus, which used to be so despised, it grew in everyone's shady back yard when I lived in Philly along Trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliatus) and required no care. Now it has disappeared. Also Peace and Tiffany. Ah, well, fashions come and go.

aha, Florida, of course, special vases (slaps forehead). A few years ago, one of the offspring bought me two silver 'thingies' exactly what you described - short bowls with a grid across the top. Being a bit of a philistine, I had no idea what they were for and tucked them at the back of a shelf. This might be what I need since the other thing which happens when I have tried a few roses is that they all fall back out of the vase. I mention this now having seen quite a few rather nice posies (Zephy, I think seems to have a vast collection of little vases) and every so often, I think how nice it would be to have a little posy next to my bed (perhaps to camouflage the teeth). The previous allotment owner planted a vast array of gladiolus which return year on year....and I confess, I have come to enjoy these flowers since even an idiot can stuff half a dozen in a pot and it looks dramatic.

This plant is only 2 years old, and I hoped that time and fertilizing could help. The bush is healthy, and when blooms - beautiful, and the smell is divine. I collect unopened buds for dry flower arrangements, but it feels like such a waste!..

I feel for you because I have a Charles Lawson as well and it only blooms when it gets cold enough. That means it hasn't bloomed for many years now here by Disneyland. I keep waiting for another cold year. One benefit of this rose is the smooth canes. This rose loves to grow. All these superior traits and it has trouble blooming. Such a shame. When it does bloom its just beautiful. I think it could live in the wild very well on just what nature provides.
