Coreopsis hardiness: Red Satin & Full Moon

I am looking at Coreopsis 'Red Satin' and 'Full Moon' for this coming summer. I know that a fair number of the newer Coreopsis haven't done well in colder zones, so I am hoping that there will be some folks in zone 4 and 5 who have tried these and can talk about their ability to winter over. Any other comments from those who have grown either one will be welcome as well - floppiness, actual size they are in your garden, disease issues, etc.

I have had no problems growing C. Zagreb, Moonbean, and Creme Brule as well as several of the C. lanceolata varieties.

I just got 'Red Satin' this summer, so can't really comment yet on hardiness. I'm interested in hearing other reviews as well.

It seemed fine as far as compactness...a nice little mound. We will see if that persists next year or if it turns into a flopper.

One thing about it though, the flowers are VERY dark. So much so that they are kind of ineffectual in the wrong situation. Most situations even. I kept changing my mind on location because of that fact- ended up putting it in the front yard near a 'Karley Rose' grass with a light colored wall behind.

I have 2 Red Satin but they were new last year so too young to know much yet. They did root in well. Stayed a nice small size as cmk said. Both in separate spots mildewed badly. We did have a cool summer with a lot of dew. Hoping it comes back after winter. However should it mildew again I'll remove the plant.

So far out of the newest that I've tried only Star Cluster has returned.

Mt Cuba Center in Delaware has coreopsis plants trials that they have been doing for two years now. They rate them after each year. Full Moon is on the list but not Red Satin. Might be worth a look.

Moonbeam is still my favorite. I've planted it in the Midwest, New England and now the Southwest. I love the delicate foliage with those lemony flowers. It blooms madly, stands up to high winds and occasional downpours, and even the assaults of the rabbits who sheared 3 plants down to just above the soil line this spring. I'm growing Creme Brulee this year because it was advertised as an improved Moonbeam. It has larger flowers and is more compact but to my eye, the shade of yellow is more golden and less lemon. Sienna Sunset is just getting established, having been planted in early July. I'm disappointed that the color is lighter than I expected, more ocher than sienna. I'm going to have to move it because the color clashes with the agastaches Coronado Red and Acapulco Trio around it. Cheryl

I planted 3 Coreopsis "Full Moon" from Garden Crossings in Spring 08. Fantastic plants: bloomed nonstop without deadheading at all. They are big and a bit lax: I put supports around the cluster of three after a heavy rain caused them to flop a bit. It is very different from Sweet Dreams: bigger and more substantial. This is the best coreopsis that I have every grown. I see from the Garden Crossing site that there is another new Coreopsis in this series ("Big Bang") for 2009. I'm going to give it a try.

Star Cluster, planted in my cottage garden, came back better than any other coreopsis. That said, voles tunneled under other varieties out in the deer resistant meadow garden! So, it's not really a coreopsis issue. Redshift was reduced in width by the tunneling, but the remainder of the clumps look good. I planted seeds (in the fall) of native prairie coreopsis palmata and those seedlings look fantastic. Cameron

mjh and mucknmire, thanks for the worldplants info. Sometimes ya just can't afford to buy all your plants nice and big. I'm glad to hear their trees are good quality. I did buy a Sharp's Pygmy this weekend at a local nursery because of the year guarantee, and I did also buy a little Beni Otaki on Ebay because the price was great (this is beginning to sound like a confession), and I may yet get one more little one to put in a pot from worldplants, because their prices are so good. Maiku Jaku ended up at the top of my list because I really like the photos I've seen of it, but then I decided I really need to go SMALL (I have very limited space). I just hope the palmatums I bought prove hardy enough for my conditions. If not, next year, it'll be one of the japonicums. Thanks for the worldplants info. Christina

Darrell Probst,formerly the Epimedium man, developed the Galaxy series of Coreopsis (all withs stellar type names). His epimedium nursery is in central Mass. so I would guess that the Galaxy series Coreopsis are at least zone 5 hardy.

I have had Full Moon for three years and it made it through the bad winter we had last year with no problem. It is a bit floppy for me, but I still really like it. Mercury Rising and Star Cluster have also done well for me.

I'm happy to let you all experiment and report back on hardiness for at least a couple of years, before making a decision on adding any of these new varieties.

Happy to report my RS made it perfectly fine. The winter wasn't a harsh one, so perhaps wasn't the most conclusive test...

Red Satin is coming back here as well. Now if she can stay healthy this well be great. Star Clusters are back for the fourth year now.
