Early blooming California poppies
Comments (9)Do you keep old (previous years') plants? In my experience, first year seedlings take longer to bloom, whereas old plants bloom sporadically all winter long even here in inland, central CA. They also recieve no supplemental water from October to April, so my volunteer seedlings are all on their own. There could be a number of reasons why your plants are blooming later. Amount of sunlight and water, I think, would be two major factors to consider. Fertilization & soil composition would also have an effect on their growth habits. Hang in there!...See MoreHot composting does not kill weeds re poppies
Comments (13)Al, I don't have grass type greens to add, I used to have lawn with clippings, but they did not get it hot enough. The used coffee grounds makes it really hot, but you need to add the osh redwood bagged. There is no other formula I found that works. Old pumpkins from Halloween if you can get them are good, but you can not get them most of the time. Broderbarb, Thank you for sharing the witchgrass page. I think newspapers have ink are unsuitable. I would need some plainish cardboard without printing. I have only a small area around some of the edges of my yard, which have to do with the neighbors. It has not spread to the whole yard or anything drastic like that. I have to look into finding some kind of cardboard that would be not dyed or printed. I was thinking about cotton muslin, you can get it from a sewing store, undyed, low priced. Cotton would bi degrade, but it would take a much longer time. One might change the material from time to time, but I have plant roots in the area so I have to be concerned about creating a barrier for those roots. I may not want to block the area. I might be better off with just cutting it off as it comes up. That's the only reason why it is not spreading any longer. I would have think it over and experiment. Do you still have problems with it coming from the neighbors? One can not jump the fence and do a treatment to their yards, however much one may wish to do so....See MoreSomething similar to California Poppy
Comments (5)Try Shirley poppies, they are a bit taller, come in shades of red, pink and white. They will reseed just like California poppies. Almost any annual that is classified as a "hardy annual" will do well with the sprinkle and neglect routine, if sowed in fall. Try Nigella, Larkspur and annual red flax along with the Shirley poppies if you want a real thrill. If you can't find a local source, the Thomson and Morgan seed catalog carries these, and others. Here is a link that might be useful: thomson and morgan seed catalogue...See Morereplacing poppies, SE exposure, california native?
Comments (11)I've had very good luck in a southern exposure with gaillardia "Oranges and Lemons" whose colors blend and create a similar patch of orange in the garden as a California poppy does, IMO. I interplant the two and the gaillardia continue on long after the poppies have come and gone. I never water them and I deadhead occasionally (about once a week) as needed. I have one group that's going on its third year and seriously, it blooms year-round in my zone 10b (Sunset 24). It's not native, but it blends nicely with my other drought-tolerant and native plants....See Moresuemcwirraluk
