How long can some plants go without water before they die?

I purchased a few variegated ivy plants about 2 months ago. 3 of them has spider mites really bad so i tossed them in the trash. One of them seemed to be resistant to the spider mites because it never lost leaves and still continues to look healthy even though they were all placed next to one another.

anyways, i went to walmart last night and they had one of the ivy's that i threw away. It was in a 5 inch pot.It was clearly alive but VERY VERY VERY DRY and completely sprawled over the pot.

I quickly got it home and watered it and this morning it is completly upright like nothing was even wrong with it.
It is amazing how it can go back to normal once it gets a drink of water.
I wish i had of took a before and after picture!

So, i was wondering how long do you think it would have been until it died of thirst?
