A lot of it depends on what kind of grass you have and what kind of soil you have. My soil is heavy clay, so it has great water holding capacity (once I get it to absorb the water). And I have mostly native grasses. We got 0.12 of an inch of rain on June 16. Since fireworks are allowed in Utah, I watered in the early hours of July 3rd. They also allow fireworks around a state holiday on July 24, so I'll water again then, unless we get rain between now and then (unlikely). I'll probably water again in August, unless we get rain before mid August or so. Assuming you've got KBG and/or rye and/or tall fescue, you should be able to go a week between watering if your grass has a healthy root system. If you go much longer than that, the lawn will probably show signs of stress and eventually go dormant. But once it gets water again after that, it will come out of dormancy.

you all miss my point ... moving a household is insanity ... moving a household plus a garden is double insanity ... been there.. done that.. what was i thinking .... especially in the high heat of summer ... [i moved when it was all dormant in january] so your plan.. as i understand it.. is to move everything you own.. into a new house.. and abandon the house.. while you plant a garden ... and i am presuming the tree is not the only thing you are taking ... maybe i am wrong ... i was glad to have 4 months to put the household back together... before i had to start messing outside .... painting.. cleaning.. unpacking .... etc ... so all i am trying to say.. is this tree really a priority ...???? now.. why do you know about the house and all already ... building??? .. is there an option to go plant it now... are there facts we dont know ... when i moved.. between the accepted offer in oct. .. and the closing in late dec ... we were allowed to deliver 1500 potted hosta to sit outside the barn ... also i had many local friends who adopted garden plants ... plant sitter if you will .... which gave me the luxury of 'time' .... at least it sounds like your move is local .... mine was 65 miles ... this is not a rare tree.. and there are much higher priorities in moving... sacrifice the tree if need be ... BTW... you cant plant it in august... it will have to be held ove, until the next proper planting time.. in fall good luck.. whatever you decide ... ken PS: just cuz the nursery would leave it in the pot until sold.. does not make it right.. they most likely have hirelings to water them 2 or 3 times per day ...

Depends where you live, where the plants are and what soil they are in. I can get my peppers planted in soil outdoors to survive 1wk with no water in desert AZ with 100F+ heat. They have established root systems. I will deep water before leaving, cover them under full shade tent. They suffer and are wilted on return, but recover. On the other hand a new seedling in a small pot with fast draining soil may not last 3 days indoors without watering. Al

Hi Andy, right now I have two plants that the leaves are hanging down and are black and crisp.. obviously froze..One the leaves are the worst, at the moment the tips, which I want to keep not frozen, are fine still red and plump..dark on top not black yet. ..Other one Aztec gold. the tips the last tips of growth are black.. That does not mean it has black tip fungus.. just mean the top tips have blackened. Real tip rot/fungus it ozzes..Two different things. What I am watching is the tip and the branch, need the branch it to stay green and healthy. I do not want to see the branch go soft and start dying yet... then I have severe damage. ok.. when the top of the branch, tip is your tips (new leaves some day) When the branch starts to get brown looking, is trying to rot..or die. that you have to watch. If left alone can go down the plant.. smiley faces can show brown, (rot) hope not. Or can just darken and start to shivle and turn brown and die.. have had both happen..severe cold damage. In both cases, would leave it alone and see where it goes. Karen B
