How do I trim Red Maple before transplant from ground to pot?.
Comments (13)I pulled the tree out of the ground yesterday, May 2014 and the root pruning I did in 2012 and 2013 paid off big time. I dug around the tree with a pick ax and it popped right out of the ground with a nice tight root ball consisting of many tiny roots. IâÂÂve also made the decision to train this tree into a formal upright shape so the dual trunks had to go. I was very nervous about this step but it had to be done: I cut the tree in half⦠And I think it looks great! The remaining trunk has nice taper as a result of cutting off the second large branch (itâÂÂs about 6â diameter at the base and 30â tall from the top of the soil). There are no mature branches left so it will take a long time before it evens out but I think the trunk has a good start. IâÂÂm looking for any advice on where to go from here. How do I shape it? When do I re-pot it? Should I cut the trunk shorter or is it a good height? Have I screwed up completely or is the right path?...See MoreHow I can put (not hanging) small plastic pots to my veranda wall
Comments (5)Parakalo John. Wow! That is an amazing photo. I keep thinking, how do you water it all? I think the previous poster mentioned some good choices. I can't think of any other way to put them up that high and that many without hanging some sort of individual round pot holders into the wall. If you're going to do many pots in a pattern like that, I might use a pattern to my plantings, as well. Like, all the same plants in the pots. Or similar colours. Sorry, I don't know what grows there in Athens. At the very least, you might also want to consider having plants with the same watering requirements planted together, so you can manage watering all at once, too. (Not one today, then another then next day, etc.) Another question I'm wondering is... are you trying to make the wall more colorful or hide the wall so to speak, or do you want all those pots hanging? If you are trying to just cover the patio wall, another idea might be to hang guide wires in a pattern (diamond or square or just straight up and down) and plant something on the ground level that would sort of climb up along the wall. Like a trellis but much larger. Like a jasmine or an ivy or something else that will creep and fill in the pattern. Good luck!...See MoreCan I remove plastic from elm tree stump after one year?
Comments (9)For over 20 years I have killed the roots of remaining stumps by painting the cut surface,IMMEDIATELY, with full strength 41% roundup. Not all trees will regrow from a stump, or roots in the ground, so I use Roundup selectively. If I am asleep at the switch and miss a tree, I can still kill it by spraying the new growth with brush killer, but it will take usually three years to kill. Comments (6)Thank you Alex. That's exactly the information I was looking for. And thank you gardengal for the container weight tip. That and Alex's skewer method should make it very easy to track the watering. Ken and smivies. I got 4 piceas - omorika, glauca, orientalis and abies - and a pinus strobus. I am going to make a separate post with pictures, and another post about site prep. I am in North Central MD, and we have hard to dig in clay soil. But the planting area now has up to a foot of mulch from grinding the stumps of some massive pine trees 2 years ago. They did not decompose as we had hoped. So now we have to remove the mulch and fill the bed up. I think it will be better if I add a picture of the site for you guys. About the staking, I went to Home Depot today and bought bamboo sticks like the nursery owner had suggested, and the only plant ties I found was a Velcro thingy. There were nylon strings, but those were labelled as vine guide type things, and they looked too thin. How do I stake though? Attach new stake to old one or insert new stakes into the nursery pots? Oh, and Ken, I am waiting until October to get into the good planting time for my area, and as that was the time I was aiming for, my planting site is not prepared yet, though I admit it's getting late. I can't access the forum from work, so sorry for the late reply to all of you....See Morehostalover360
