Saying the gardenwebforum is joining the Housse (something like that) family?
Or is it spam? The gardenweb forum logo looks legit. It came in my SPAM, and I haven't opened it yet.

It's Houzz, and you can open the email just to learn about it, if you want. Houzz is basically a decorating inspiration site.

Surprised nobody responded to this yet. In spite of always checking the box, I get followups sporadically too. I may get one and go back to find there had been a few before that. I've gotten into the habit of going back to check on my own--especially on this forum, because when I post here I'm really stuck. This has been discussed on the Comments and Suggestions forum too. GW just doesn't function like it used to, but still a great place. Lots of good, helpful people. Sandy

It is indeed unfortunate when a user's e-mail address is hijacked. Fortunately it doesn't happen too often. I agree with Owbist's thinking that you are being spammed by an e-mail generator. To be on the safe side, if this just recently started I would recommend that you do a full scan with all your security applications to insure that you haven't contracted a bug of some type. Be sure all your definitions are current. If you do verify that it has been hijacked pretty much all you can do is create a new e-mail account and notify only those of necessity. DA

Nothing. THEY are having an issue. E-mail technical support and tell them what is going on. You will find the link at the bottom of this page. Scroll down tot he Green box. Look to the right--see the link that says "contact us?" click on it. That will take you to to page that says "Mailing Garden Web." You will find an e-mail form. In the form there is a line that says "Nature of Message"--with a pull down arrow. Scroll down until you find the topic "Technical difficulties with our site." Highlight it--and then tell the admins what the issue is. I went through all the steps, because it's not very intuitive. (At least I don't thinks so!) This is also the form you can use to reprt abuse of the site, such as someone who is OBVIOUSLY using the site for advertising, or a blatalnly political posting--that sort of thing. melanie

I got this email and actually thought it might explain the recent explosion of in-text advertisements on this site. Maybe Houzz wants to increase the profitability of GW.

Actually, Tamara posted in another thread that the pop ups should be gone by today. Houzz definitely uses their site to make money, but not that way. They use data mining instead, like facebook.

I think data ming is like when you look at something on Amazon and the go to garden web or facebook and there is an ad for that item minutes later. BIG BROTHER is watching us

Yes, what injfarm said. Sites like Houzz and facebook put tracking cookies on your computer that watch all your internet activity, even when you're not logged into the sites, in order to collect (mine) that data and sell it to advertisers.

Does GardenWeb do that now? And is there a way to find out which websites do this and which don't? Is there a list somewhere?

It also occurs to me, that Houzz already does that? So if you have visited Houzz, they are already tracking all your internet activity?

Gardenweb's old privacy policy did not allow for that, hence all the ads that everyone complained about.

Yes, Houzz has done this for some time, which is why I don't go there anymore.

If you're worried about websites tracking your online activity, download the Ghostery extension for your browser. It shows you which websites are tracking you and allows you to block the tracking mechanisms on those websites. It's totally free.

nancyjane, I got an e-mail recently. I did not click the button [if it had one] to confirm my GW account. Maybe I thought it could be spam like I have gotten...just wanting you to click their link. I finally made it here, but am still trying to figure out where everybody and everything is.
