I did the same. You've missed one meaning; it's also used as a name for the scraps of a hare given to the hounds after a successful hunt (probably derived from the "halloo" type meaning).

But I'm pretty sure that is NOT the meaning that JKR has in mind....

I suspect she means as in a saint - only an evil version thereof - hence "deathly". And to me, "deadly" is something that will merely kill you, whereas "deathly" is more dreadful, somehow. James Bond faces deadly weapons, but that's nothing - Harry Potter is going to face deathly hallows !

Personally, I don't like the title - but I admit it'll get everyone speculating.

'All Hallows' is quite a common name for older English churches.

While I'm not overly-impressed by the title (it's a bit awkward, IMO) I am intrigued by the word "hallows". I was wondering if she's using it to describe a time or event rather than a place, as in All-Hallows Eve. I hope we won't have too terribly long to wait to find out!

According to my dictionary, Deathly has two main meanings:
resembling death or somebody who is dead, or,
high in degree or intensity

and Hallow is to make holy or revere, or have great respect for

However, my first take upon seeing the title was that everything will come to a climax on All-Hallows Eve....after all, isn't Hallow'een the most important holiday at Hogwarts?
And may I also add the the picture of grownups discussing this tickles me-and I bet it thrills JK Rowling!
Now I really have to get back to Christmas prep.

The NEW YORK POST today announced the new Harry title as being ".....Deathly Hollows" not " Hallows".

That makes me think that hollows are shallow valleys which would make sense. However, it is kind of a quaint word to use in a title for Harry Potter!

I believe the title refers to The Horcruxes (sp?) -- created by Voldemort to hold slivers or parts of his soul. Harry must destroy each one --- if he hopes to defeat his enemy.

The diary was One. The ring was Two. Both destroyed at great cost.

(The theory is of a "seven-part soul")

Just which objects or items or even persons or even a snake might be the remaining Hollows?????

But do remember the Prophecy!!

I have to disagree with Martin and say that this title seems to me to be JKR's most interesting. And the titles would have been less clumsy if the "Harry Potter and..." had been left out.

Not worth a new thread, but here are the covers for the UK HP7: Deathly Hallows. The one on the left is pretty good.

The US cover has been revealed today too.

The UK children's cover is awful! Far too cluttered and crowded, and the faces are very badly drawn, esp Hermione. I prefer the American one. Not that it matters as I have no intention of reading either!
