Thanks everyone, I'm glad to have that window ledge so I can put them all out together too. My santa collection is smaller, so they get the shelf above the television in the family room--but I didn't put them out this year. DH and I were laughing that they have a nice backdrop since we've recently had several days of rain (it stopped for Christmas eve and Christmas Day, wasn't that considerate?)the mountains north of us now have beautiful snow capped peaks now. Yes, it's nice to see it but not have to shovel it or drive in it! ;o) Luvs

It's been many years - my "kids" are closer to 50 than 40. I remember my last snowball, though - last year when daughter flew me to AZ, there was no hint of snow in Phoenix, but there was prior to our arrival at Flagstaff en route to the Canyon ... so when we stopped at the motel in Flagstaff, I threw a snowball at her. I'm reading a 700 pp. book (with over 100 pp. of notes) now, called "The Snowball" ... the definitive story of the life of Warren Buffett, a few years ago the richest man in the U.S. (maybe the world). ole joyful ... not looking for more snow

Hi early-blooming-rose on the prairie, Maybe you'd like to explain to the multitude assembled how "chinooking" works ... as there may be some who aren't familiar with the experience. Greetings Emma, Just wait - second childhood catches up with a good many of us, sooner or later. _______________ Daughter gave me a substantial book about Warren Buffett, the Oracle of Omaha, and the title is "The Snowball" ... the premise being that one rolls a snowball to about the size necessary to build a snowperson ... ,... (oh, right - my mistake ... "snowman" may be the proper word ... as dew women [that was supposed to be "few", dang it!] may be interested in being labelled "chilly" ... let alone "cold") ... ... near the top of a hill, then pushes it over the edge ... it grows as it rolls, to a much larger size. When one hangs on to some of the money that passes through one's hands ... and puts it to work, skilfully - same difference. Question: what does it cost to delay an investment program for one year that's to run for many years? Answer: the amount that it would have grown in the last year prior to being cashed out. ole joyful ... quite a lot of snow around here ... but too hard (and crusted) for balling ... or manning ("personning"?)

So, my options. Lots of them, quite likely all involving tree roots. Option 1 - Rain gardens for sidewalk drainage. Where our front walk flows down to the sidewalk, and also just because of grade, water stands. It does this from the center of the house over to the driveway, and if there is a real storm, it overflows into the driveway, then the street. This also happens on the other side of the driveway, so I'd probably try to do one long, narrow garden in front of the sidewalk, up to the flower boxes, and a bigger one on the north side of the driveway between the sidewalk and the street. Option 2 - Backyard gutter garden. Again, there is a tree root issue, and anything here would likely have to be hand dug (by which I mean with a hand-held spade, not a shovel). Our backyard is on Chalmer's Drain (I always thought it was Mallets Creek, but it appears not??) - and there isn't much in the way of a run-off issue back there. The waterway is lined with caged rocks, and I suspect my back garden is already acting as a filter between the house/garage and the creek. Just feels like, since I've already got a long gutter clearing the water away from the house, this wouldn't be the most helpful rain garden. Option 3 - Driveway Dig Out Right now I have a downspout that comes out from the corner of the house about 3' into a flower bed. The flower bed helps retain some water, but it isn't dug in more than a few inches. Problem here is two-fold. The ground for the first 4 feet near the house is full of gravel. And then, tree roots. In an ideal world, I'd dig out a drainage path from the house-bed, under the walkway, into the other bed, and build the rain garden inside that bed. Then I'd put in the black flexi-pipe and cover the over up to the rain garden. My helper isn't going to want to help dig out that much... so I'm avoiding this, although I'd like to see that water come out further from the house, and need to do something about that regardless.
