Tis better to give than to receive... so need some help!

And I'm coming down to the wire, gift-giving wise, so am turning here for some non-fiction recommendations. For my father, who is an American history buff and well-read, I am trying to find something good NOT dealing with wartimes because unless the book is new or really off the beaten path, he's probably read it. Industrial revolution, the Great Depression, or even something "adventurous" along the lines of Shadow Divers or Krakauer's books would be good.

And for me, can anyone recommend a readable non-fiction book about India/Pakistan/Bangladesh in the twentieth century? After really enjoying Mistry's books, among others, I would like to learn more about this region and Wiki doesn't cut it.

If anyone else needs help picking a gift book for someone, feel free to tack on to this thread. My brain is starting to freeze up so close to the shopping deadline...
