I am still reading Clive James' The Revolt of the Pendulum, but couldn't resist being the first RPer to see in the New Year!

astrokath -- I did read the Guernsey book and loved it. I've not heard of the Rosenblum book, though. I'll look for that. Thanks.

Thank goodness! Someone else did not care for "Old Filth" which I tried after you all raved about it. I could not get interested at all, dumped it early on and wondered if there was something wrong with me!
Of course, no-one was murdered in the first chapter, so not my usual read!
I found I had missed the publication of the latest Simon Brett 'Fethering' cosy mystery "The Shooting in the Shop" which I found on the library shelf.(I had gone in to look for a nice watchable DVD, too many repeats or grim crime shows on TV at present.) It takes place in a (disguised) place I know well, seasonally over Christmas, so I have got stuck into it and left my former loan to read later. (I know, I have SUCH a low-brow taste in books!)

Hi everyone. Hope you are all keeping warm. I have to admit, we haven't even really seen winter at its worse, but already I am sick and tired of snow. I am seriously considering moving somewhere where there is no snow. I can always come back to visit. All the boxes are great. Love to hear what everyone has sent and the enthusiasm of the recipient. I agree Shirley, it's like Christmas. Speaking of christmas. My tree is still alive and going strong. I put it outside in the stand, of course the water is frozen solid and under a foot or two of snow. We strung berries and oranges and nuts, pinecones slathered in peanut butter and then rolled in seed, all over the tree. The birds are going insane to say the least. I haven't wintersowed a thing. i decided this year i'll just go out and sprinkle seeds everywhere. i was getting prepared but then we got hit with the first snow and then the next one and then the cold and then more snow...so i said the heck with it. It sure is another cold one tonight. I think we are going down to about 9 degrees. guess i'll take that as opposed to minus any degree. hoping i will be able to join in february's swap. love the simplicity of it, but then i can execute on that...that's what craps me up with swapping LOL just an issue i need to get over. well, that's it for now. i have an early morning tomorrow. be well everyone, stay warm and remember....Spring is on Monday, 21 March 2011...56 days, 19 hours remain. maryanne p.s. mellen, i would love that website/link as well.

Daddy's Savory Tomato Biscuits Prep Time: 15 Minutes Ready In: 25 Minutes Cook Time: 10 Minutes Servings: 18 "When you use vegetable juice cocktail in a simple, fast biscuit instead of milk, you'll get a rosy, tender, savory treat." Ingredients: 3 cups self-rising flour 1/8 teaspoon baking soda 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon white sugar 1/2 cup shortening 1 cup tomato-vegetable juice cocktail Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Grease a baking sheet. 2. Stir the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar together in a bowl, and cut in the shortening with a pastry cutter until the mixture looks like crumbs. Mix in the vegetable juice cocktail just until moist, and turn out onto a well-floured work surface. Gently knead several times just until dough holds together, roll out to 1/2-inch thick, and cut into rounds with a biscuit cutter. Place the biscuits onto the prepared baking sheet. 3. Bake in the preheated oven until risen and lightly browned, 8 to 10 minutes. This is another recipe from All Recipes. Have almost finished "Portobello" - Ruth Rendell. Read 100 pages a day, was so caught up in it. The strange thing is -- it's not one of her best - isn't very suspenseful ... only one murder, so far - and that one was a mistake! ... and am on last 85 pages. You don't really get to know or understand any one of the characters, which is odd for Rendell. Anyway, it's a good, light read (even funny now and then! ... one of the characters becomes obsessive about Chocorange candies ! ).

Lemonhead101 -- "My Family & Other Animals" is one of the most richly exotic lives I've ever read about !! After all these years (6), I still remember the old but lovely woman with the veeerrrrrry long hair taken care of by her son (the tutor?).

Annpan -- I didn't enjoy "FILTH" much, either, and said so here (maybe 10 months ago). I read it word-for-word all the way through; but, to me, it had a dry "feel". It's been too long, and I've read too many books since then, so I can't remember much about it anymore. ... Guess it didn't make much of an impression! So don't feel bad ... just go out and find a good, juicy book.

I finished Ariana Franlkin's City of Shadows. I found this by accident - I had never heard of it, despite being a fan of her work under this name, and the other she uses, Diana Norman. It is set in Berlin in the 20s and 30s, and I loved it! The main characters have echoes of Adelia and Rowley - they are both straightforward and outspoken, and very likeable. It revolves around murders and Anna Anderson/Grand Duchess Anastasia, and the coming of the Nazi Party, and is very well written. I enjoyed this very much and certainly recommend it to those who like her medieval books.

I finished Room. I did not like it at first, but forced my way through the first few chapters, then could not put it down. I finished and went back over the first few chapters again to make sure that my initial disinterest didn't cause me to overlook anything.
The Help is next. I finally came to the top of the waiting list.
I checked the library for Major Pettigrew and discovered it is only available electronically. I can download it to my PC since I don't have an electronic book reader and it "expires" after 2 weeks. I don't care for this really, maybe it is time for me to look at a Nook or Kindle.
I've been in a Luddite phase since my retirement (I cheered when I could cancel the Blackberry service)and now almost three years on I am surfacing and enjoying technology again, so the timing may be right.

Last night I finished Peter Ackroyd's novel Chatterton, the main plot of which concerns a failed poet who uncovers clues suggesting the famous English poet Thomas Chatterton faked his famous suicide in 1770. Chatterton is mostly remembered now as a forger who passed off his own work as that of a fictional, medieval monk.

The novel has several subplots revolving around the issue of art and plagiarism. Time-shifts in the book also introduce historical figures like the poet Chatterton himself, Victorian painter Henry Wallis, novelist George Meredith and Meredith's unhappy wife Mary Ellen (who later ran off with Wallis). Meredith was the model for the famous Wallis painting depicting Chatterton's suicide by arsenic.

I had been immersed in non-fiction lately, so wanted to just fall into a fictional world, "just a good story" kind of thing. So picked up a book called December by Elizabeth Winthrop about an American family who has an eleven year old daughter who hasn't spoken for nine months. No one seems to be able to help her, and you can watch the dynamics of the family change over time. Interesting so far.

Also - odd. It's an American book, in a British print format, and uses American spelling and grammar. Even though on the back its price is in pounds stirling. A strange combination, I thought. Perhaps other Rpers in the book business have an insight as to why this is?

In the meantime, still enjoying Gerald Durrell and the book of journals, The Assassin's Cloak...

I haven't posted in so long, just got out of the habit I guess but do find I have missed reading and posting the last couple of years. As I scroll down I see lots of familiar names and some new ones so Hello again to all.
I agree with those who posted about Kate Morton's books. I have read them all and loved them. Kathleen Kent has a new book out called The Wolves of Andover which is a prequel to The Heretic's Daughter. I enjoyed them both. I borrowed Room from the library and read about half of it. I can usually read about anything but I just could not finish it. The subject matter was just not for me. My newest favorite read is Unbroken by Lauren Hillerbrand. I found it to be an utterly fabulous unputdownable (is that even a word) read. I don't know when I have felt like I could recommend a book more than this bio of Louis Zamperini and his life before during and after WWll. Trust me you will love it. Laura herself is quite a story if you read about her life with CFS. I went to the library today and picked up Seabiscuit which she also wrote. I didn't think I would like a book about a horse but I can't imagine not liking anything she has written.

Just finished Ghosty Men by Franz Lidz. A very interesting non-fiction account of the final years of Langley and Homer Collyer, eccentric brothers whose chronic hoarding led to their tragic deaths in 1947. (Their story was also fictionalized by E. L. Doctorow.) Ghosty Men also intersperses the story of the author's uncle Arthur, another eccentric hoarder. Both tales are funny but ultimately very sad.

Last night I read Patricia McKillip's new fantasy novel Bards of Bone Plain. Not as good as The Book of Atrix Wolf, but still quite good so I will buy it. I used to buy her books and Robin McKinley's automatically but I've stopped doing so. The last two or three of McKinley's books have not appealed to me at all. Her latest, Pegasus, I returned to the library half read. This saddens me. Several of McKinley's earlier books rank among my favorites of all time.

I'm reading Our Kind of Traitor by John Le Carre and am enjoying it. I had quit buying his books because I no longer liked them the way I did the early ones and haven't read the last couple. I'll have to go back now and see what they were like. This one is a youngish English couple on vacation in the Caribbean who are latched onto by a Russian money launderer.

I finished a book called My Name is Mary Sutter by Robin Oliveira, which has been out for a few months in the US but not released here yet. It tells the story of a young, accomplished midwife who wants to be a surgeon. She is drawn into the Civil War as a nurse, and the book tells about her experiences at the front line.
I see that many at Amazon thought it was a bit flat, or that the characters were unsympathetic or not well drawn, but I enjoyed it very much. It may just be that I am very interested in both the Civil War and medicine, but I found it quite compelling.

Now I've returned to the book "The Herring in the Library" which I abandoned for another "The Shooting in the Shop"! It is a 'fragmented' story. Would that be a good word to describe one which has a couple of narrators and a portion of a book being written by the main character? I find it hard to settle into this kind and have to get up and make a drink or do the dishes etc. in the breaks!
Do other RPers get the fidgets too in this type of reading?

I continue to try to learn the interesting history of my adopted city. Am almost finished with "Mister Skylark: John Bennett and the Charleston Renaissance," by Harlan Greene. Perhaps some of you enjoyed "Master Skylark" when you were children, as I did, a tale set in Shakespeare's England. Bennett, its author, was quite active in the poetry societies of Charleston in the early part of the last century, as well as making marvelous silhouettes as art, to illustrate his work. He knew many of the famous writers of his times, but as an outsider from Ohio, was never fully accepted by his adopted city, largely due to his "liberal" views towards minorities.

Mary, have you read Dorothea Benton Franks' books set mostly in the Low Country but including some Charleston stuff. Light reading, but I like her. I was particularly taken with The Christmas Pearl, which included a ghost and that is not my usual fare. It is a short book and set in one of the grand houses along the Battery.

I think Charleston is the prettiest city in the U.S. and really like to visit. Hope you are enjoying living there.

Mary/Woodnymph, I didn't realize until I read your above posting that Charleston is your new home city. I wish my sister-in-law was still around because you and she would've had a lot to relate to each other. She was so proud of Charleston, justifiably so I think, but she was also knowledgeable about its darker past and was not loth to talk about it.

I have visited Charleston several times and, like most visitors, I am enchanted with the architecture. I love the house/garden tours in the spring and fall. I find the houses fascinating, especially the ones with front doors (that look like regular front doors) that open onto verandahs instead of hallways, while the main entrances to the houses themselves are about midway down the length of the lower verandahs. I forget what this style is called. I also enjoy listening to the several variations of local dialects -- so interesting.

Mary, if you run across any books or articles about the Charleston earthquake (circa mid-1880s), would you let me know, please.

Carolyn and Frieda, yes, I am greatly enjoying living in the historic part of downtown Charleston. I am able to walk everywhere and study the incredible variety of its architecture and gardens. I think I chose the right city for relocation, due to my love of history. As you know, I moved from the "historic triangle" of VA, where the focus was on Revolutionary War history. Now, I am busily trying to update my knowledge of the Civil War. As an aside, this is a very bicycle-friendly city, and I have joined the number of bike owners, taking tours around the Battery and along the two rivers.

Sure, Frieda, if I come across anything about the earthquake that hit the city in the 19th century, I will post it on this thread. There is a wonderful shop within easy walking distance which deals in nothing but books about the history of Charleston and environs.

I'm so glad I ran across your post! Did not know Laura Hillenbrand had a new book out. BTW: who is Louis Zamperini ? -- altho' it rings a bell.

And yes, I've read (mag. articles) about her brave struggle w/ CFS ... what an amazing feat for her to write -- and write gloriously! -- w/ such an awful disease. (BTW -- She looks beautiful, too. ... Must take really good care of herself.)

"Seabisquit" is one of the greatest non-fict. books of all time -- a thrilling, heart-felt, deeply human adventure ! The horse and the people are BOTH fascinating ... so beautifully, carefully drawn. I gave it to my brother for Xmas -- he threw it in his car ... Later he said: "I forgot about it ... then, one day, on a break w/ nothing to read ... I saw that book ... l was hooked from the first page !" Now, whenever he goes to a bookstore, he looks up anything he can find about horses! ... and he's a "dog person", not a "horse person."

Laura Hillenbrand was on a PBS-TV doc. about Seabisquit a few months ago ... you could try their archives at their Website (pbs.org) for that interview.

Is anyone here a Ruth Rendell or Barbara Vine (another pen name for RR) reader? I'd given up on her in the early-1990s because the books were so formulaic ... but a couple years ago I tried one out ... it was really exciting reading! Since then I try out a Rendell (or Vine) mystery once or twice a year, and so far haven't returned any to the store (or to the library unread).

I'm almost finished w/ "King Solomon's Carpet" ... a dark Barbara Vine mystery set mostly in or around London's Underground system (subway). In every chapter there's a small section in italics telling tidbits about the London subway. It's fun to read these. I didn't know it was the oldest subway in the world -- 1863 !

There's a dark, sinister yet magnetic male character who prowls the subway w/ a horribly ugly guy in a big bear costume! Most of the characters live in a big old Victorian house that was once a school for girls. In this place live -- a man fascinated w/ subways all over the world, writing a book about them; a lonely sweet sad guy who lives there w/ his pet hawk; a woman violinist who's walked out on her new baby and husband to find fulfillment in London; and a few others. It's pretty enthralling now I'm at the last 60 pages.

lauramarie, I am very much a Rendell/Vine fan. I loved "The Chimney Sweeper's Boy" (the title was something like that). As well, I liked film "The Talented Mr. Ripley", which was taken from one of her books, I believe. I will look for the novel you mentioned above.

I've just finished Richard Russo's newest: "That Old Cape Magic". Anyone else a fan of Russo's work?

And Wood - I enjoy Richard Russo as well.... He's very good at making believable characters...

And me - I am reading two very contrasting books: Smallmeadow Sampler by Gladys Taber, an extremely mild book which is quite good and to balance the saccharine taste, Random Family: Love, Drugs, Trouble and Coming of Age in the Bronx by Adrian Nicole LeBlanc. It is NF and follows two Latino siblings, brother and sister, as they traverse the dangerous journey of teenhood in a very urban poor drug-rich neighborhood. From what this book describes (and what my police hubby reports), I can't really see how these families can avoid NOT being involved in some crime at some level... It's a tough problem. But then again, one of the reader reviewers on amazon pointedly noted that this only represents one side of the South Bronx families and that there are a lot of people who are not sucked into this... Still, it's an interesting portrait of a life that does intrude into many lives except through gangsta music etc.

woodnymph - Russo is one of my favorite authors, his characters are so real. Even the films that have been made from them are good and worth multiple viewings. I think that there is just one of his books I haven't read - because I never to think to look for it and it never seems to be on the shelves.

He also lives in/near the town where we stay when we go to Maine. It was amazing the year that I discovered how many of my favored authors lived in that area.

After struggling with, but finishing Adam Bede I went for a little light reading and enjoyed Aphrodite's Hat by Sally Vickers (remember Miss Garnet's Angel?); a collection of short stories.
Then picked up Joanna Harris' Blueeyedboy and didn't like it one bit and haven't bothered to finish it. This is written as a series of blogs, emails etc everything computer driven/led with a middle-aged hate-filled weirdo/oddball living with mama as the 'protagonist'.
You know something really nasty is going to happen and I just didn't want to find out what it was.

Vee, thanks for the mention of Aphrodite's Hat, I didn't know Sally Vickers had another book out, and I loved Miss Garnet's Angel. I'll have to see if my library has it.

I made a quick foray into a new-to-me series of paranormal books, Moon Called (Mercy Thompson series) by Patricia Briggs. This was very much in the Sookie Stackhouse genre, and featured a strong female main character interacting with werewolves rather than vampires (though there are vampires in the author's world, as well as other things that go bump in the night). Solid writing and very entertaining.

One of my resolutions for the new year is to read more and surf the internet less, so a quick, fun read was a great way to start.

I'm reading Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith. The story is about a serial killer of children in the USSR when there was officially no such thing as murder back during the Stalin days. The protagonist is a demoted and disillusioned Moscow detective who has been sent to a far-off village as punishment for being too nosy.

The book was lent to me by an acquaintance who works in the coffee shop I frequent weekly. She is a reader but usually not the same kind of books I read, and this one proves my point. It's good, and I am hard at it to see how it all ends; but it's certainly depressing even though one man's humanity is having some effect on his new boss and on his wife who only married him for a better life.

This is the same woman who highly recommended and loaned me Room, however, so I have to pay attention to her. She did warn me that this book is "different."

I've just finished The Big Sleep and now wish I had given Chandler a chance much sooner, because it is brilliant. At least I have the rest of his detective novels to look forward to.

I am upset because the municipal library has shortened the loan time for books down to three weeks, which, despite my fast reading pace, is sometimes not enough for me to finish a library book, because I need to be in the right mood to read certain books. They say it's a temporary measure to increase the turn-over because of budget cuts. I had planned not to renew my library card this year, but when I heard of the budget cuts I decided to do my bit and support them, even if I can't keep a book for the usual four weeks.

I've only read two books so far this year: The Heretic's Daughter by Kathleen Kent and The Toll-Gate by Georgette Heyer.

I'm trying to get through Jonathan Franzen's Freedom, which received so much good buzz, but it's a struggle. It's due back at the library tomorrow - no renewal -- so I may never finish it.

Next up: Little Bee for book group and maybe A Pigeon and a Boy, a possible book group selection.

june, I have read and enjoyed Mr Golightly . . and several of her other books. Vickers is a trained analytical psychologist and lecturer in the subject which is probably why her books have that 'different' slant. Have you read Dancing Backwards?

I've just finished Anita Diamant's newest novel, and found it riveting. "Day After Night" concerns a group of young women, Holocause survivors, who end up in a British "detainment camp" after the war, in Palestine. How they make their escape to freedom, and their interaction forms the bulk of the story. The character delineation is excellent, I might add. It is a novel, but based upon actual events and places.

Last night I finished Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi. I enjoyed it, though this type of book is not my usual fare. I know almost nothing about Iran, and am not very interested in the subject of Middle-Eastern politics. I decided to learn more about this tragic country after watching a very interesting documentary about the exiled Empress Farah.

Well, I had to face the reality that I just wasn't enjoying either of my two books so into the give-away pile they went, and my heart lifted up in happiness. :-)

Stillmeadow Sampler was just too sweet, combined with the fact that perhaps I wasn't in the right mood for it... I prefer a little more bite to my books than what she was writing. And then Random Family about the family in the Bronx who were enmeshed in a crime-ridden lifestyle was too hopeless - and I could tell it was going to be more of the same as the book continued. Well written, but perhaps more of an essay than a book...

So instead, my ILL books were jumping up and down saying "read me", so I picked up American Passage: The History of Ellis Island by Vincent Cannato. Very interesting so far - who knew that they used to hang pirates where the base of the Statue of Liberty now is?

It's not really just a straight history of the island, but also includes how the US government has evolved over time in how it handles the immigration policies and why... Rather nerdy, but I am finding it rather interesting.

June, I did read Diamant's "The Red Tent", but found her latest novel far, far better. I was interested to learn that the author has also written numerous books on the Jewish religion and its culture.

lemonhead, Gladys Taber's books are, indeed, saccharine. I think they reflect an earlier, less complicated era. May Sarton writes of similar issues in the natural world, but her work has more of a "bite" and even a bit of cynicism, IMHO.

BTW - Patricia Highsmith wrote "The Talented Mr. Ripley." It's odd that you brought it up, because a woman was just interviewed on radio who has a new biography about her. She alone was allowed access to all PH's personal diaries, notebooks, interviewed the hand-full of still-living people who knew her for years -- some died before this new bio came out. She was allowed to study PH's archives at a Texas university which has a lot of her private papers. ... She even went to her house in Switzerland -- saw the furniture PH designed. Sorry, can't remember the woman's name, but should be easy to find on any Website dealing w/PH or Amazon. Personally after reading one of the Ripley books I was turned off -- the guy is just too creepy for me!

At present, I am enthralled by William Broderick's novel "The Sixth Lamentation." A very complex novel based upon the German Occupation of France. Some of the characters are collaborators, whereas others are assisting Jews to escape to other countries, or hiding them. The descriptions really bring the sufferings and austere atmosphere of the war era home.

I have started another Kate Morton book, The Distant Hours. It is set in 1992 with the back story to WWII in a very old house, and she really has the gothic overtones down pat--shades of Jane Eyre and Rebecca.

I am just back from an extended long weekend at our beach house, and finished a couple of books.
The first was a YA book called Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly, which I thought was excellent. The 17 year old protagonist was well drawn and feisty without being overdone. She finds a diary from someone caught in the French Revolution, and we learn of the fate of 10 year old Louis XVII.
The other was by A J Jacobs, whose previous books (The Year of Living Biblically and The Know-It-All) have been great fun. This one, My Experimental Life, tells of shorter experiments like the above two that he has conducted on himself and family to write articles for a magazine. Things like obeying his wife for a month, outsourcing the boring parts of his life to a company in India and telling the absolute truth. Quite good, but not as engaging as his other two IMHO.
Now reading Stuart Macbride's latest, Shatter the Bones and enjoying it more than the last one, as he has reined in one of the characters who I was finding increasingly annoying.

Am now reading a Cathy Kelly book -- "What She Wants". ... A young British woman moves to a beautiful Irish village where she befriends several women -- all different ages, occupations, education levels, temperaments, etc. The chapters bounce around covering each woman in-depth (thoughts, feelings, dreams, words, actions). Funny, sad, dramatic, charming -- plot really moves along. ... Am over half into it -- only began 2 days ago.

Cathy Kelly lives in Ireland -- is really good at describing the look of an Irish village or big city ... and the "flavour". The recent books by her weren't anywhere near as good as the ones she wrote in the late-'90s / early-2000s -- so I found this one written in 2001. It's what I'd call "In-depth Chic Lit."

Astrokath...I am looking at about 2 feet of snow accumulated since Christmas in my front yard, mounds of snow along the roads and at corners that block, completely, the view from my high riding (compared to most cars) SUV...and you talk about going to the beach. It was hard to grasp that until I saw it was your post. Enjoy the warm weather, this too shall pass. V

Well, I could do with warm - the temperatures for the last three days have been 37, 42 and 42.3 degrees C - that's 98.6, 107.6 and 108.1 F for you in the US or UK!!
It will be down to the low 30s tomorrow, so much easier to cope with. Thankfully it wasn't that hot at the beach while we were there!

Kath, here in the UK we are meant to think/work in metric measures/temps etc. At my advanced age I don't find it easy, nor do I like to be bullied by Govt. dictates to please our Masters in Europe.
I notice when the weather is either very hot or cold or a deluge of rain has fallen the weathermen revert to Fahrenheit, feet, inches and so on. We are still allowed to use miles (on road signs) and pints . . . when buying milk and beer. ;-)
I can tell you that the temperature was 26F this morning.

Vee, I know what you mean - the temperature being over 100F is much more impressive than 37C! We went to metric measurements in about 1975 when I was a teenager, and while I like using grams/kilograms and litres, I have never come to grips with heights. I'm still 5' and my DH is still 6'2" *g*

America is funny about measurements as well - around here, everyone is very focused on old measurements (like foot and inches), and I tend to think that way as well except for very small measurements when I think cm and mm... Weather is always 32 is freezing...

Reading-wise: read three books last weekend:

* The Murder of Roger Ackroyd - Agatha Christie --- never read any of hers before, and have not really read much mystery so this was fun even though you have to keep track of five million different characters!

* My Jim - Nancy Rawles -- a new perspective on Huck Finn and his friend Jim... This is from the POV of Jim's wife who he left when he went down the river w Huck.. and told through a generational perspective. Reminded me in parts of "How to Make an American Quilt" as the book was structured around the sewing of a quilt... Once I got used to the strong dialect, this book was really good...

* The Doctor's Wife - Sawako Ariyoshi -- the fictionalised story (but based on true events) of the first doctor in seventeenth century Japan to use anasthetic (sp?) forty years before Western docs found the use for chloroform. Interesting to read about how life was organized for the hierarchy of feudal Japan and its families...

Now reading Elisabeth Bumiller's The Secrets of Mariko, a NF that follows the life of an ordinary Japanese family from the wife's perspective in the late 1990's... (Interested to see if much has changed in the few centuries between the settings of these two books..) Plus curious to see if it's like that new NF out right now about the parenting style of a Chinese-Am family...

Trying to read more books from other countries and about other countries (i.e. non US, non Canada, non UK)... Aussie ok. :-)

Lemonhead, a book set in Japan that I really loved is The Ginger Tree by Oswald Wynd. I think we discussed it here a number of years ago.
