TWO Hobbit films??

So the good news is that, according to this story, Peter Jackson has settled his dispute and will at least be producing (though not directing) The Hobbit.

The bad news is that they seem to be talking about two films. Two?? Is there some lost Hobbit book I'm not aware of? The Hobbit is a kids story, in the end. Why on earth does it need to be filmed in two parts, except (he says cynically) to make more money?

I wonder if the second movie they're talking about would cover the end of The Return of the King, the chapters comprising the scouring of the Shire and Frodo's departure from Middle Earth, which weren't included in the last movie. Is there enough there for a full movie, though? I suppose there's a lot of additional Tolkien material that could be spun into another movie, but I certainly don't see The Hobbit as a two-parter!

I'm just glad that Peter Jackson will be at the helm again, I can't imagine anyone else being able to match his vision.

I read elsewhere that one movie will be The Hobbit, while the other will be some unspecified material linking The Hobbit to The Lord of the Rings. The source speculated that this would be material from the appendices.

J.R.R. Tolkien left a huge volume of notes and other material at the time of his death, and his son Christopher has made a career out of editing and publishing it, most recently The Children of Hurin. There is certainly material there for another movie. I do admit to being a little uncomfortable with the idea of this second (or fifth!) movie. It could be rather wonderful, but it could go oh, so wrong. So far Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh have been amazing in their handling of the Tolkien material. Let's hope that they continue to be so deft.

Haha you LOTR nerds! Just kidding, I'm a fan too..but honestly I'm more a fan of Star Wars! One day I will name a variety 'R2D2' :P On the subject of jades, I just had a cool idea today! My roommate is always trying to get me to drink coffee from his Keurig coffee maker. He showed me the little cup of ground coffee after it was done brewing, and I realized that it would be perfect for a small plant! The little cups are about 1 inch in diameter, have a coffee filter secured in with about 1 centimeter of empty space below the filter (water can drain through) with a hole already punched in the bottom! I filled them up and put my jade leaves in there to grow. He drinks a lot of coffee so I should have more pots soon to put lots of cuttings in! I am afraid the coffee filter will rip at some point, but I wasn't able to poke my finger through it so it is pretty strong. Does anyone else use this kind of coffee maker? Check out the coffee container next time you make a brew. -Chris

I have read about the technology used to produce many of the scenes. The director and his staff used a few new tricks and I want to see the results. Tricky technical controls were used; Two sets of cameras were slaved together on 2 different sets and each scene shot simultaneously. One set was a 'green screen' setup. Later, figures from the green scene were imposed on the other scene. Another piece of trickery was used to make the Wizard appear larger than the Hobbits even though the actors were normal sized persons. The usual way to do this by perspective could not be used; A new method was devised. I'm hoping the movie is as good as advertised. I was never a fan of the Hobbit story line, but did find it had a certain amount of charm and imagination. In the first Hobbit movie, a new technique was pioneered for the weird character, Golum. It is my understanding that the same actor was used for this remake.

I won't be seeing the movie. I might consider getting it on DVD. I resent being expected to pay for three films, for a story which is really only enough for one, or two at most. Peter Jackson may be telling us that this is his Middle Earth vision, and it includes lots of extra stuff that are not in the book. But the cynic in me knows full well that it's been made into three movies to get us to pay through the nose three times. If Cloud Atlas can be done in one film, so can The Hobbit. And it's not as if it's cheap to go to the flicks these days either....thirty five quid for me, my wife and my daughter is plenty. I can buy several DVDs for that money, and watch them in the comfort of my own home, without the smell of popcorn, the noise of kids and the glare of mobile phones distracting me. OK. Rant over. I feel better now.
