The Hobbit Movie

I just saw this today and thought the LoTR fans here might be interested. The official Hobbit trailer is up on YouTube, but the movie won't be out until December 2012. I wish it were sooner, but based on the trailer, it looks like it will be worth the wait.

How wonderful to see Gandalf again -- and the scenery -- and to hear the music. Bilbo looks more like Sam but if I watch the trailer a few hundred times that won't be a problem by the time the movie actually appears.

I can't believe we have to wait an entire year for the movie. They certainly know how to build up an audience, don't they? Great marketing!

I really like the way they did the song, mysterious and beautiful. Reading the lyrics in the book I find they seem quite jaunty, even perky. I much prefer the haunting interpretation, so much better at expressing the feelings I have for Middle Earth.

BTW, if you go on the site for Hobbiton in NZ, you will find that they are now posting pictures of the refurbished site, though not in detail. I'm still not allowed to post my own pictures, not until the movie is released, but you can catch a glimpse by going there.

Funnily enough, I too, have an idea for next year's bookmark exchange. It's all thanks to the sister I visited at Christmas. She's very crafty and decided to make some bookmarks while I was there. If I don't forget...I am going to utilize one of the designs she made (and gave to me) for the next exchange. Sheriz6, I like your idea for storing bookmarks and am going to look for something similar in which to store mine. Right now, they are in various locations around the house. I want to gather them all together so I can select just the right one for whichever book(s) I happen to be reading at the moment.

I won't be seeing the movie. I might consider getting it on DVD. I resent being expected to pay for three films, for a story which is really only enough for one, or two at most. Peter Jackson may be telling us that this is his Middle Earth vision, and it includes lots of extra stuff that are not in the book. But the cynic in me knows full well that it's been made into three movies to get us to pay through the nose three times. If Cloud Atlas can be done in one film, so can The Hobbit. And it's not as if it's cheap to go to the flicks these days either....thirty five quid for me, my wife and my daughter is plenty. I can buy several DVDs for that money, and watch them in the comfort of my own home, without the smell of popcorn, the noise of kids and the glare of mobile phones distracting me. OK. Rant over. I feel better now.

I have been reading a couple of OOP mysteries from Betterworld and also bought a copy of "Gimme More" by Lisa Cody to read again as I enjoyed it some years ago. It has been very hot, over 100F so I was bunkered indoors with the air-conditioning on, reading and eating Christmas chocolates. I came to a part where a character remembers floating in a swimming pool which sounded enticing and then I thought "Why am I not doing that?" so instead of reading about it, I grabbed my bathing suit and walked for a full minute to the one in our Village. Sometimes I let fantasy get in the way of reality. Has anyone else ever done that?

I just finished in the past hour Traces Remain: Essays and Explorations by Charles Nicholl, one of my favorite writers. Three of his earlier books I can read over and over and always find something I never considered before: 1) The Fruit Palace ( I think this is subtitled: On the Trail of the Great Cocaine Story -- anyway that's what it's about, two of his forays into Colombia in the 1970s and 1980s); 2) The Reckoning: The Murder of Christopher Marlowe; and 3) The Lodger: Shakespeare on Silver Street. I feel that I will ponder Traces Remain for a long time as well. The essays included are short pieces that I suspect anticipated Nicholl's longer explorations, such as: "A 'Naughty House': Mr. Mountjoy at the Magistrates' Court" (Christopher Mountjoy, a French Huguenot immigrant, was Shakespeare's landlord in Silver Street. It seems he might have been a pimp too,) "A Canterbury Tale: Christopher Marlowe's Boyhood" "The Life etc.: Shakespeare's First Biographer" (Nicholas Rowe, his "Mr. William Shakespeare" was written as a preface to a new edition of The Plays published 1702) However, Nicholl seems to have boundless interests -- from many times and many places. He obviously gets a kick out of literary forensic research. Three that tickle me are: "Screaming in the Castle: The Case of Beatrice Cenci" (Beatrice was executed in Rome in 1599 for the murder of her father) "The Wind Comes Up Out of Nowhere: Arthur Cravan in Mexico" (Cravan was a boxer who was also a poet! and the nephew of Oscar Wilde's wife Constance. But he's most famous for his disappearance in Mexico in 1918. "Mystery at Moonlight Cottage: The Disappearance of Jim Thompson" (Thompson vanished in Malaysia in 1967.) There are twenty-five essays in this book, but I could read fifty or a hundred more! I hope another collection is published.

I just watched the four Peter Jackson production blogs on You Tube that I found after watching the trailer. The amount of work that goes into making these movies is incredible. I remember watching all the extras on the LOTR DVDs that showed some of this and also have books about it. This movie is being filmed in 3D so it is even more involved.

The Hobbit was the first book I was able to get into after 9/11 and it led to my LOTR obsession, very belated compared to most RP fans.

My trip to New Zealand was in 1987 so Hobbiton was not even dreamed of then but I would love to see it in person. However, I can't imagine making that trip again.

Sheri-thanks for posting that! It looks fantastic & in 3-D yet-I can hardly wait....I am so impatient!
I will probably have to read the book again before it comes out.
