What would you suggest?

Good Morning all!!

I was just on ebay looking at Jane Austen novels and came across a volume by another author titled What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew. Sounded interesting so I looked up reviews of it online and was disapponted to read that the author doesn't go into much detail. Well, that started me thinking and I decided that I would like a book to read that really takes you inside the actualities of everyday life for ladies and gentlemen, rich or poor, right down to the most menial of servant. What were the customs really like? What WERE the foods they loved?

Can anyone suggest some book that will intellectually transport me back there? I am counting on you all, you have never let me down before and I need a great read for my long winter hours on my school bus when the powers that be can't decide if the blizzard raging is enough to send the kiddies home or we should simply stay on our buses and 'stand by'...brrrrrr.

Look forward to all your suggestions! :)

Thanks, Kim
