Terrific Beginnings, Drippy Endings

You all know the phenomenon, I'm sure, of the book that starts like gangbusters but either completely wimps out or ends so stupidly you want to send the writer a nastygram.

Here's a place to warn the rest of us of those most egregious letdowns, or you can complain about mild and not-so-mild disappointments. You don't have to reveal the endings -- please don't! Just tell us what the book is.

I'll nominate The Poisonwood Bible which is excellent for the first two-thirds. But the last third...gee, Ms Kingsolver, didn't you have somewhere else you could rant?

I still haven't got over The Murder of Roger Ackroyd either; but some readers seem to like its ending just fine. How about you: do you think Christie "cheated"?

The flip side, of course, is the book that plods at the beginning, but suddenly or eventually breaks away, and then ends with a bang -- or at least satisfyingly. Hmm, are there many of those? I can't think of a good example! The plodders are probably more often cast aside with the 50-page rule.

Birds Without Wings took a while to develop (I almost ditched it) but it turned into quite a good story. However I can't recall much about the ending, though I don't think it fizzled -- if it had, I would've been p.o.-ed enough to remember, I think.

What's the book with the best ending you've ever read? I'll have to think more about that, but I know I've read a few that have made me sigh appreciatively as I close the book or turn back to the first page to reread immediately.
