Forbes just published its list of the richest fictional characters: Forbes' Fictional 15. I must admit I've never heard of Tony Stark or Prince Abalaliki.
Emma Harte from A Woman of Substance and the rest of the series-she founded and grew an international department store company-she's probably somewhere around the low middle of the list.
Tony Stark is Iron Man from Marvel Comics. Prince Abalaliki is a mystery to me! Wait -- if I'm not mistaken, he's the guy who sends out emails (spam) to everyone asking for help in getting his money out of Nigeria!
I remember reading that Lex Luthor made the Forbes list last year but that he got booted out this year.
Oh sure -- not only is Batman in the comics, the comics are gathered together into graphic novels. Movies and sometimes the comics are rewritten as text novels too. Tony (Iron-Man) Stark is of the same kidney. Lex Luthor, sometimes on the list and sometimes not, also has his roots primarily in the comics. But Bruce Wayne is unquestionably the best known of them.
Really! I think that's where they got Prince Abalaliki!
Ok, here's one for the list -- Captain Nemo. He sinks ships and plunders sunken Spanish galleons. It's GOT to be expensive to maintain an advanced submarine!
I must say I would like to look over Rhett's finances. He seems to have prudently kept his blockader money in Yankee greembacks rather than investing in the Confederate dollar. But was his 'old' money in Confederate specie? Or worse yet was it in a house and lands? According to the book his father disinherited him. But the old gentleman may not have been able to completely cut his son out of his inheritance (depending on how the estate was set up), or he may have failed to revise his will in time.
Remember that Smaug's bed of gold was taken over by the Dwarves, who probably spent it all on renovating their residence under the Mountain.
Sheri's mention of Smaug reminds me of the dragon Fafnir in the Nibelungenlied who had a hoard like Smaug's. The hero Siegfried kills him and takes his treasure.
