I might suggest that you check out pixelofink.com. You can sign up to receive a daily list of free/special deal books for the Kindle. The genres are varied and, hopefully, you will find something you like. I have actually found too much. :)

Most of the out-of-copyright classics are free - such as Jane Austen, the Brontes etc.

I've also got a Kindle ap on my mobile phone which is perfectly readable and is always in my handbag.

Thanks for the responses. I realized after I hit the "submit" button that of course everyone likes different types of books, so the ones one person would want are probably not the types another would consider a keeper.

I've been checking out what I can get from the library for an e-reader in the way of new books and the pickings seem quite lean!

I received a Paperwhite for my birthday in October (it was on order for a couple of weeks) and have just finished my first two books. Along with the Paperwhite, my family also gave me a gift card for $30 and a case.

I have so far gotten all of my books from Amazon. They have 100 books for $3.99 or less and a daily deal which is even cheaper. I check their daily special regularly and have found several I want. These are less than $3.99 usually. There is also a YA on special each day. Black Friday brought a bunch of very inexpensive books from that site, too. I have used up my gift card, needless to say.

I have checked my local library (small town). Most of the offerings are the classics, which I prefer to purchase as audiobooks. However, there are also current books available and I will look into that in the future.

I met a woman in a waiting room reading a Kindle Fire, and she said she gets all her books from the public library for free. She is given 3 weeks on the first check out. She said she has finished them all so far and hasn't needed to recheck them out yet.

I would never have bought myself a Kindle, as I am somewhat of a technophobe, but must say, I am in love with it. I carry it everywhere and it fits in my small purse really well.

There are several resources available to get free or (cheap) e-books. I do get the Pixel of Ink daily newsletter, but also the EReader newsletter wich allows you to specify the genres you prefer, but also has an extra list of freebies listed by country that you can click on.
Don't forget you can go to Amazon & ck out the 100 best sellers & freebies, you can also narrow the lists down by genre by checking the left column.
I have 'discovered' quite a few new to me authors this way.

There is also a website called Daily Cheap reads....so lot of resources.
