Another Kindle question

I'm hoping for a Kindle Paperwhite for Christmas and have already been spending time on Amazon putting books on my wish list. My question is what cheap -- less than $5 or free -- books do people recommend?

I'm not wanting to download something from Amazon I can get from the library unless it's a keeper in my opinion (and most books turn out NOT to be keepers), so I'm looking at things like PG Woodhouse, EF Benson.

Can one get a Kindle book from other bookstores (like B&N) or do they only do Nook? I know Project Gutenburg has tons, but am having trouble finding ones I want.

If Santa doesn't come through, I'm buying my own, having convinced myself it would be wonderful to have enjoyable books which can fit in my purse so I'll always be able to find something I want to read.
