RP Discussion - The Gathering by Anne Enright

It's a remarkable thing, but I don't think we've had an RP discussion of a Booker Prize winner since Life of Pi by Yann Martel in 2002.

So, welcome to the Reader's Paradise Discussion of The Gathering by Anne Enright. Considered to be a worthy winner of the Booker Prize this year, the story is narrated by Veronica, who is one of twelve grown-up children in the Hegarty family; it discusses the suicide of her younger brother Liam, and the effect it has on her and the family.

As always in these discussions, SPOILERS ABOUND!

I'm going to open the discussion with a few ideas for consideration. I have to admit I found this book compelling, but hard. I've read it three times, but I expect to be able to dig a lot more out of discussing it with you. So please help me out with ideas to discuss. I'll leap in a bit later once I've heard from a few of you.

So...

Is this a story of the suicide of Liam, or is it the breakdown (and possibly recovery?) of Veronica ?

Am I the only person who feels Tom (Veronica's husband) is remarkably tolerant of her?

Given Veronica's admission that most of what she remembers from her childhood isn't accurate, and given that a lot of what she talks about has to be fantasy, how much can we trust anything she says?

Anyway, over to you.
