We "fall back" next weekend, November 3rd. That will give us a bit of dawn light in the morning, which is much better than getting up in the dark, IMO. However, it will quickly be dark by 4:30 - 5:00 in the afternoon, which I find a bit depressing.

I don't mind the "falling back" as much as the "springing foward" -- it takes me weeks to get back on track from losing that hour of sleep. This seems to be getting worse as I get older, too.

After all the fuss of extending Daylight Savings time several years back, I still wonder if it's worth it.

I actually hate it. I so wish we would drop the whole silly thing. It was fun when I was 7 years old, but I've never liked it as an adult. The state of Arizona doesn't do Daylight Savings Time at all, and they seem to get by just fine.

Kentucky is divided between the Eastern and Central time zones. Louisville used to be Central and was changed to Eastern in the 60s. We were told it was because we had branches of a number of companies headquartered in New York City and needed to be on the same time as they were. It was the opinion of several of us lesser mortals that it was so that our corporate businessmen could get in a few rounds of golf in the afternoon.

This all means that we are now forward a time zone and "spring forward" another hour for DST. The sun just isn't where it used to be. As I said on the other thread--old fogey, old fogey, old fogey.

In Western Australia we don't change time at all! This means we are currently three hours behind some of the States in the East. There have been a number of attempts to alter this but every time a trial was done the change to put us only two hours behind was voted out. In general, it doesn't suit the life-style here to be in the dark early and the heat at night according to an altered clock.

Yes, I fall back next weekend, too. I hate to see it get dark so early, although not so much as when I was working. Sometimes it felt as if I didn't see the light of day for a few months. I went to work in the dark and left in the dark.

I really don't think it saves much energy to "spring forward" in the spring, but I do enjoy having light into the evening.

Where I am in a time zone makes a difference to how I feel about it. Knoxville is at the western end of the time zone while Baltimore was the eastern end. Sun already goes down an hour earlier in Baltimore than in my Tennessee home. Of course it also rises an hour earlier, too, so I guess I can't complain too much. I do remember playing tennis until almost 10 pm here which I couldn't do in Maryland. Think being a night owl makes a difference?

I've always disliked the time changes, as they mess up my sleep patterns for weeks. I heard these time changes were set up in favor of farmers back in the day. But now, so few do any farming, relatively speaking....

I really hate the time change and wish we would just choose one time or another and stay on it all of the time. It makes no sense in our modern world.

Has anyone else read Two O'Clock Eastern War Time by John Dunning? Isn't WWII when daylight savings time came into being? I think I can remember it being called "war time." I was nine when the war was over.

Carolyn, DST started in Germany during WW1. When it was introduced into Britain later in the war, some people called it "German time". My grandfather told me about it. The concept was strange and confusing, hence the worry about fading curtains etc.!

Judging by your comments we would all be much happier if the clocks stayed where they were. In the UK there is always an ongoing debate as to whether Scotland should have its own time-zone as it has such reduced hours of daylight in the winter.
In 1940, double daylight saving was introduced in Great Britain to enable farmers to have longer time for gathering in the harvest, often up to about 11pm.
These days our local 'estate' (very large land-owner) has men ploughing, harvesting, drilling etc by tractor headlights until a job is finished. This is to make the most of the occasional dry-spell in what has been a disastrous year 'weather-wise' for farmers.
Ann I like your 'fading curtain' comment. Rather like the simple souls who worried at the changes to the calendar in 17??. "Give us back our eleven days" thinking they would now die 11 days earlier. ;-)

We sprang forward 2 weeks ago. I don't like it to start as I am back to running in the dark instead of the beautiful early light, but it soon evens out.
Our state is very large and Adelaide is one of the few places in the world on a half hour time zone - we are 9:30 ahead of Greenwich (not considering DST in either place). There is often talk about moving to eastern time to be the same as Sydney and Melbourne for business, but in these days of electronic communications I really don't think that is necessary. As it is, the time line is very close to our eastern border and the towns in the west part of the state suffer when DST is in effect as they are dark for a long time in the morning.
