the Darcy name

It is not often that the family names of persons in a book are scrutinized. A major character of "Pride and Prejudice" is Mr. Darcy. The remarkable fact is that the Darcy family was and still is a prominent member of the English aristocracy. Their home town is Arcy in France hence d'Arcy. The first Darcy who came to England was a well known knight of that family who joined William the Conqueror, fought with him at Hastings, and was rewarded with much property in England for his services to William. Did Ms. Austen know this or did she not know this?

When is this due?

Best bet would be to read her biography and determine how well educated she was. Good Luck!

Attempt two, first attempt just errased by my "wonderful" pup Theo. I adopted him from a rescue group I found through petfinder. After I lost my Spud to cancer I wanted a pup so that I wouldn't have to face that again for a very long time. Made sense at the time. I can totaly understand the above post of "what was I thinking" There are moments like when I fell in the snow and on his own he came running to find out what happend, to other moments when he chewed the cord to the vacume cleaner twice... He is black, fluffy, and loves to climb up and lie on my side and lay his head near mine. I have said many times since he arrived its a very good thing your cute cause otherwise to the moon you bratt! But despite the loss of several socks, a calcultor and a few other non important items he is worth it and I wouldn't give him up for the world. (but Im looking foward to getting past the puppy stage) Today on the radio they started a serries about dogs. They had an author Katt or Catts was his last name speaking about his dog Rosie. He had written a fictional book about her. He thinks very differently about dogs then most. I didn't seem that he feels that dogs have emotions or that they love their owners. He felt that we as humans assigned emotions that we want to see in our pets. Rather then what is really going on. That dogs are responding not because they feel but a learned behavoiur or instinct. He called it the disneyification of animals. I can see his point a little bit but I still know that animals feel emotion just not same as us. They had a couple of other people speaking about how dogs see or rather smell and hear the wold. It was an insteresting topic with a lot of different information, Im looking forward to the rest of the serries. Here are a couple of recent pics of my boy. I gave in to the preasure and dressed him up at Christmas. He thought it was fun getting that stupid hat off and running away with it. (he is a cocker spaniel somthing cross- his daddy was a wondering heartbreaker who didn't stick around long enough to get his breed)

The movie, "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" was popular about the time we got a miniature brown dachshund. Yep, we named her Molly. When she was only a couple of months old, she chewed up and swallowed most of a glass test tube. For a while she spent more time at the vet's than she did at home. We are talking about major problems with a sliced up gut. She was also run over by a school bus resulting in a cracked pelvis, dislocated hip, and some more internal injuries, had serious problems with those floppy ears, got herself caught on a piece of wire digging under a chain link fence, and somehow or other had a hunk of skin broken lose from the muscles, which later died from lack of blood supply. What with all the skin trimming, operations and patch work, she was a mass of scars....but still Unsinkable. I won't mention the false pregnancies that she had twice a year that required shots to reduce the milk supply so she could walk. She lived to the ripe old age of 15 when her long spine finally gave way. Over the years, she cost us a bundle of money, but she loved going to the vet's. He was her good friend and always made her feel better. Yep, The Unsinkable Molly Brown was well named!

Maybe I shouldn't comment as I am from another culture and another language but I must fervently recommend a neutral name. Here in Sweden there is statistical evidence that boys with names like Ronny, Sonny, Conny and Johnny are overrepresentated in prisons. These are all names with a distinctly thrashy ring because they are so foreign and come from American films. Some survive their name, of course. A well-known Swedish professor called his memoir "My name is Ronny" and everyone understood what his background was and what he had gone through. I am sure there are US names similarly tainted. The same with names of actors or football players like Kevin and Glenn. One of my friends is too embarassed even to mention the names of her eldest grandchildren, Prim and Neo. Their parents are both engineers and these names are probably screemingly funny in engineering and computer game circles. Poor kids, I hope they have second or third names they can use when they grow up. The present trend here is to take the names common in the greatgrandparents' generation and the 10 most common names for boys now are William, Lucas, Elias, Oscar, Hugo, Viktor, Filip, Erik, Emil and Isak. I like them all except William, only because it's an English name and I know that it will not be correctly pronounced by most people.

Thanks all. I'm very pleased with Darcey so far. I do wish it would last a bit longer in the vase. I usually get at least 3-4 days before some of the more mature blooms begin dropping petals. They sure hold up better when I'm running the A/C. I don't blame them. I hold up better running the A/C too! Carol I bought the vase for a song last summer. The house down the street was having a moving sale. I spotted that vase instantly and made a beeline for it. It had a piece of masking tape on it that read "$5.00". I asked the man if he knew anything about it. He told me it had been his deceased mothers vase and she'd had it "as long as he could remember". I was horrified and asked if perhaps he might ought to keep it. "Nope" was his response. "I'm not dragging her old nicknacks across the country". I felt guilty, but if I hadn't bought it someone else would have. At least I'm using it and treasure it. I think that's better than it going to someone who would resell it for a quick buck. Well, some information for this possible 'student'. I don't think anyone by the name of Darcy is a 'prominent member of the English aristocracy' today, although there are people about with that surname (but not blue-bloodied).
Don't believe everything you read about knights that came over with William the Conqueror to fight at Hastings. If the numbers claimed were true they would have had to travel on at least the RMS Queen Elizabeth to get here as there would have been so many of them.
A place of that name in France, is not in Normandy so a non-Norman knight would not have owed any allegiance to Wm. Remember Normandy was a country in its own right and was at war with France for many years.
Beware many of the so-called 'genealogy' sites you will find claiming kinship, coats-of-arms, long lost relatives. Much that is written on Wikipedia also needs to be taken with a large pinch of salt.
You many find some Darcy's in Ireland . . . although one man's claim that he can trace his family back directly to the tenth century has to be somewhat spurious . . .
I doubt that Miss Austen either knew or cared.

Vee, I totally agree. She possibly thought the name sounded right for a hero. Romance writers tend to pick strong sounding names nowadays too...some are quite hilarious!
Siobhan, do you mean on this forum? I haven't noticed unless it has been in the guise of a discussion, as this was. I am such an innocent!

Yes Ann, not terribly often, but every few months or so. Often enough that I recognize it and have a good laugh. The question above is classic - any question worded like this from someone who joined RP the same day is generally a student.

We have, however, at different times had some actual students who were terrific and contributed a lot to the forum.
