The site is actually a companion to the publication, and an attempt by CR to stay viable in the publishing business. The method being used is called a "hook". You review the free limited information with the hope a viewer subscribes to the site, or the magazine for total access. Just recently CR offered me a discounted publication subscription renewal along with a free gift subscription for anyone of my choice. And, this is not the first time one of my subscriptions has done this. Right now on the desk next to my monitor is an offer from Smithsonian Magazine. They are offering me a reduced renewal, and two free gift subscriptions. The "hook" is being directed towards both myself, and in the future the new readers. It is obvious to me the Internet is rapidly effecting the publication industry. Finally for myself when I am spending money, as I did just recently on a new SS refrigerator and a SS range, I am more concerned as to the quality and reliability of the information rather than as to whether it is free or not. I would love to have that available to try on on some novels. I used to be a fast reader, but as my eyesight has worsened and my attention span has deteriorated, I find it difficult to read for more than a few minutes at a time. Then, I have to stop and go do something else. For someone accustomed to gulping down novels in one sitting, it's very frustrating to take days and days to finish one. I'd also like to try it on some technical writings because I know how it feels to cudgel one's brain into focusing and comprehending certain types of documents. In fact, I was trying to read about the holacratic process yesterday and it felt like I was reading gobbledygook. There were words in sentences, but they seemed to have no meaning.

Chris, I'm not surprised your library doesn't have any Giles books. It has been several years since she died, and I'm not sure how widely read she was anyway. She was certainly popular here, though, and her books are still in our libraries and some of them in state park gift shops, etc. I'm sure you can find them on line. Some of her books are better than others, of course. I read a literary criticism of her work once that quoted her as saying she always wanted to write like Willa Cather, and the reviewer said she had succeeded--beautiful writing but she forgot to tell a story. (Sorry, Cather fans.) Mrs. Giles was also quoted as saying she should have been qualified to write because she had read a book a day for years. Sounds like some of us could qualify on those terms, doesn't it?
