We need humor.

In 1992 before the US presidential election someone did a very clever thing to a local road sign. On the median of an expressway in town, there are large green signs indicating the side streets as you proceed down the expwy. One side street is named ROSS ROAD. Someone fixed it so the big sign on the median read ROSS PEROAD, an allusion to candidate ROSS PEROT. Pretty darn clever, thought I.

Just a few days ago, I was reading on the News about a yard cleaning service. They come once or twice a week to pick up your pet's poop. I think I would be willing to pay if I had a big dog. LOL

Anyway, the name of the service was....Doody Calls.

Oh....that is very clever!

On this aforementioned walking trail, the town has provided stations with small plastic doggie bags for picking up the "litter" and an attached can for disposal.
One afternoon I noticed a man coming out from an abutting nature watch with one of these bags clutched in his hand and no DOG in sight!
Eeeew.
Well, I guess when nature calls, it is very conveninent of the town to provide a solution in lieu of actual public restrooms. LOL.

Saw this name for a plant nursery in a book:

WEED IT AND REAP

Thought that was a cute name for a nursery.

My favorite was a place where you can purchase sod for an instant lawn. It was called "Buy the Yard".

And a cruise ship called (this is sad...and I have a photo to prove it): "Fydior Dystoyvsky" HUH??? Who was handing out the paint brushes THAT day?

It may be an uncommon spelling, but as the original version is in a different alphabet, any transcription into our letters can only create an approximation of the sound of the word. Therefore no definitive right or wrong version exists - merely agreed conventions - and the accepted conventions change, e.g. Peking/Beijing.

Different languages with different pronunciation rules will have to spell transcribed words and names differently to keep the approximation of the sound, e.g. English Khrushchev, German Chruschtschow - same person.

So, to get back to your cruise ship - what was its country of origin?

Working in a law firm, and being a notary public as well, several years ago we received a document that must have been typed by someone new to the legal field. Underneath the line for the notary's signature it said

NOTA REPUBLIC

I'm sorry-but the idea of partying on a cruise ship called Fydior Dystoyvsky boggles the mind.

In our part of the world, there is an estate agent (do they call them realtors in the US? Anyway, someone who buys and sells houses...) whose name is Haart. Their advertising tag-line is "Haart is where your home is".

I've been looking at that for ages. It doesn't help that in the UK, the word is not pronounced "doo-ty" but "dyoo-ty"...

Sorry Martin, but that's the way the cookie crumbles. I guess you would need to hear a sloppy American accent say "duty" before you got it.

I saw the ship docked in Sydney Harbor but I do not know it's country of origin. Usually, the ships are registered in nations that have very "relaxed" laws, fees, and insurance requirements. Perhaps it's since been re-painted, or, rather, hopefully re-named.
