I LOVED this book, it was so clever. I'd definitely recommend it!

It was clever, it was interesting, it made for a GREAT book club discussion, it is thought-provoking and definitely to be recommended. In my opinion, it seems to be akin to James Thurber's kids/YA book, The Wonderful O.

This is NOT a spoiler, simply a short paragraph of how the story begins. Ella Minnow Pea is the story of a fictional island country whose most revered citizen was the man who came up with the sentence, "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy brown dog." which is of course, the most well-known sentence to use each letter of the alphabet. This man has a big statue erected to him in the capital city in this country. His well-known sentence is printed around the statue's base. One day, a letter falls off. The town elders get together and think maybe their hero is speaking to them from the grave and they outlaw the use of that one letter... and the story takes off from there.

Run out and get it... it is a story you will remember and ponder well after you close the back cover.

I found the tax shelter in this posting when searching for a gift for my brother. He is a tax preparer and has everything. So I just had to share what I did for him. I took one of those woodcraft houses from Walmart- removed the two screws from the base. I cut a 1" block of wood that fit into the bottom of the house. I glued this block onto the base thus allowing the top of the house to be easily lifted off the base. I cut a 1/2" groove in the center of the block with the table saw so I could set a card of thumb tacks into it. This was hidden in the house until the top was lifted off. I wrote a poem for this & read it to him while my daughter did a Vanna White presentation of the house. Everyone got a good laugh out of this and I finally did a complete craft project! It's been a while. Hope you have as much fun with this as we did. Here's the poem: I drew your name for Christmas It's an honor, don't you know To get my brothers name for Christmas Ah! ashopping I will go. But then I started frettin After searching high and low Whatever will I get 'im (Twas wrong to worry so!) I went into an office shop Maybe something for your desk? I talked to the clerk a lot She tried to aid me in my quest. He could use a tax shelter Is what the lady said It seemed a bit off-kelter But there was nothing left instead. So here's your little shelter All painted so very nice The foundation has been mended The roofs' been polished thrice. The flowers are all blooming In the big pot by the door The bumblebees are buzzing And there's no sawdust on the floor. It seems to be the perfect place I do agree she's right It sure beats a plain old case And your tacks! They're finally safe at night!

April is here - what are you reading?

I've had sporadic internet access over the past month, since we are in the process of moving. As a result, I've spent much more time reading all the books I've been meaning to read. So, in April, I finished: Naked by David Sedaris (he always cracks me up, though, the last chapter takes place in a nudist colony and sometimes his descriptions are a bit to apt to stomach) Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe (it was on my husband's reading list for a world history class and I started reading it aloud to him during a car trip--then of course I had to finish it) When the Emperor was Divine by Julie Otsuka (I picked it up because it was short-only 144 pages-but what a beautiful book!) Middlesex by Jeffery Eugenides (Not my favorite book ever, but lots to think about long after the book is finished) Stones in Water by Donna Jo Napoli (I love her YA novels that are take-offs on fairy tales, but this was a much harsher book about an Italian boy kidnapped during WWII and forced into hard labor for the Nazis. It was okay.) The Dogs of Babel by Carolyn Parkhurst (It started gimmicky, but interesting. A man's wife falls from a tree in there back yard with only their dog as a witness, so he decides to teach the dog to talk. The story became really far-fetched with a weird society that surgically mangles dogs so they can talk etc. And it didn't even have a good ending.) Breathing Lessons by Anne Tyler (I loved this book. The entire novel takes place in one day as Maggie and Ira are going to a funeral for her friend's husband. Only drawback was that I had "Love is a Many Splendored Thing" running through my head for three days after reading it.)

Ok, I got through half of Pillars and am tossing it in the trade pile. I am now wondering if I actually read this book, coz I don't remember it being this bad. (WARNING WILL ROBINSON....SPOILERS ABOUND!) This book badly needs an editor, one who will keep his descriptions of every minutea (sp) of daily life to a minimum, one who would stop his constant reminders that so and so is sooooo horribly ugly, that this woman has unruly red hair (which in that day and age wouldn't be the case, it would be hidden), that her big dark eyes opened wide, it might have been readable. Said editor could also have told him to make the building of the cathedrals reflect the grandeur of these buildings, rather than a blow by blow description of every little thing (it read like a how to manual). Basically, his research was showing, something that is not good in historical fiction. The story of Tom itself was really well done, and if he just stuck with that, and his cathedral it could have been a shorter, tighter, more interesting book. But aside from Tom, every other character was cardboard. Each person was either good or bad. There was little complexity to them, little growth. But two things that really did it to me: the anachronisms, and gratuitious sex and violence Every other page had an example of either something out of place in the time period (the uncovered hair was the most glaring) or 20th century speech coming out of 12th century characters. AS to the gratuitious sex and violence - it was so unnecessary. Yes, it was a violent time. But why was it necessary to graphically detail every single murder in bloody detail? There were several descriptions of rape here that could have come off a police blotter, it was so detailed. This last was really creepy - the really bad bad character was a horribly self centered noble's son who thought it great fun to cause misery and death. He has fantasies about this young noble girl that were so over the top that I had to wonder if these were of the character, or of the author. When he finally does rape her, brutally and repeatedly, the author spares no details. And this happens several times throughout the book. Again, it makes me wonder about the author, more than gives me the sense that this young man is evil incarnate. The political angle between various chuch members and various nobles were interesting, but again each incident was black or white - he did not show the complexity that I am sure was involved in each situation. Ok, thats enough. If you want to know more about 12th century England, start with the Caedfael series. Then move on to Sharon Kay Penman, start with There Be Dragons, and continue on until When Christ and his Saints Slept, an incredibly well told tale about Englands first devastating civil war. And no, I won't be reading the sequel. I do need to read something tho that will get the bad taste of this book out of my head. Mary Modern has been recommended several...

New house came with great Koi pond! Debating how to handle maintenance
Q
Comments (39)
Hi Jane, the upper smaller pond is called a bog and it's purpose is to clean your water and offer a naturalized setting. This is a good thing that someone planned that feature. Your iris as with most of the water iris can be on the aggressive side. I divided mine with a saw a year ago. You wouldn't know that today though. I have Gamecock and Yellow flag. Yellow flag are super water cleaners. My gamecock has never bloomed but I do feed them with the approved pond tabs so as to not upset the overall environment. Personally, I would wait to divide as you could still get some cold snaps and they might be too stressed to handle the cold under those conditions. Placing them in a water garden plastic container/basket would make the job of dividing in the future much easier. There are many bog type plants to choose from. I love parrot feathers. They like to float on top and koi like to eat them so it is better the two don't meet. In regards to water: You might check to see if there is a koi club nearby or a garden center with knowledge about water gardens and koi. Of course the internet is full of information and it can be like the wild, wild west. You will run into many differences of opinions. I ran into that and it was very disheartening and totally confusing. In the end, it's up to you to do homework on water chemistry and how best to maintain your pond. I only say this because of experience and I hope you understand. I would gladly tell you what works for me but our ponds and environments are very different. Sad experience tells me that stuff happens on Saturday nights when there are no stores open to get emergency supplies so now I have those things, just in case. At minimum, you should know how to test your water. The good news is your pond is established meaning you have all those beneficial bacteria working for you. That can take months to get going. The first year of a pond can be an adventure :( Barring an ammonia spike, the bacteria should be able to handle the majority of work. Prior owners said to just add water occasionally. That probably would be okay because of your total volume. Doing the whole chlorine removal probably isn't necessary unless you are changing out thousands of gallons. A couple of hundred gallons added to what you already have will dilute it enough, I would think. Looking to the immediate future, spring is coming which will mean a food change. Water warms up, bacteria get more active. I would imagine the number one mistake people make is overfeeding. When the water temp. is low, you might not feed at all. The fish's metabolism slows down and food won't process. Koi can live in iced over conditions with a small vent hole for gasses to escape. They can do this for a long time so don't feel you are torturing them. But then spring comes and they are hungry and you need to be careful with the type and quantity of food because they will make a lot of waste and your bio filter needs to warm up in order to process waste. Are your Koi more cigar shaped (male) or rounder (female)? Spawning season is coming and that affects water quality too. Finally, think long and hard about adding more fish until you feel really confident in your maintenance routine. You probably will have to muck out the debris on the bottom, old leaves and such. Does this pond have a liner? Cleaning it out is messy and exhausting. Your filter will need to be cleaned or backwashed and you should check all your equipment for wear and tear. Pumps do wear out mostly when you least expect it. Hopefully they left you some notes on the how, what, where for reference. Did the prior owners take care of this themselves or hire a service? I hope this helps a little. Have a great day!

We also used this book for book discussion and everyone loved it. The play on words and the use of English is wonderfully creative. Our group spent over an hour discussing useless and useful letters and what we could really do without!

Let me tell you my experience with ella. I read this thread for the first time last week. Immediately, I fell in love with the whole idea of the way words were used in this book and the mind of the author and thought, My daughter will love this! I live in MA., she lives in Vt. I called her at work and read her an excerpt I found at amazon and told her she has to look this up. Thought that would be the end of it. This past Saturday evening she called me from the dark, cold parking lot of Boarders Bookstore in Keene N.H. hysterical and teeth chattering, to read me passages as she waited for friends to finish their shopping. We were rolling on the phones, so to speak. What a wonderful read! It comes to me next she promised. Thank you for this book, for making me aware! My daughter and I had a great phone call, great laugh and talked about other books we've read together when she was younger and I thought she had forgotton. All because of Ella...and you. Now, can you help us remember the title of another book? It was by Roald Dahl. It was a book of what I call 'fractured' fairytales. I would read them and use different voices and crack my kids and myself up. Now, they are in their 20's and still remember that the Prince in Cinderella got fed up with one of the stupid stepsisters and cried 'Off with her nut! Off with her nut!' We loved it and want to read it again.
Thank you, thank you,
Kim

The writer of Ella also has written IBID which comes with great reviews as well......and apparently in the same vein.

I just ordered Ella and am eagerly awaiting it's arrival!

Don't you just love RP! It is my primary source for literary information.

Just noticed your question. I think you're referring to Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes which were poetry versions of the standard fairy tales. I particularly liked Red Riding Hood, myself.

Just started Emma Minnow Pea. Thoroughly enjoying it so far. I'm really quite angry and upset on behalf of our heroes....

Reading this thread last night, I remembered having seen this book in the clearance rack at the nearest Half Price Books last week. I stopped there this afternoon, between errands, and it was still there for $1.00. Got it right away.

A dollar is a bargain for that book! (Actually, it's a rare book that a dollar isn't a bargain for, but...)

Finished Ella Minnow Pea last night. Oh, I did enjoy that. Very clever, without being too clever-clever, if you know what I mean. Loved it.

RP's one and all - thanks again!

I'm picking up mine from the library tomorrow. After all this discussion on it, how could I resist such a book? I am just about to start a new book as well, so it will be top of the pile. I can't wait.

With so many people reading this, it would be nice to start a separate discussion thread where we could properly discuss it, spoilers and all. As I'm running a separate discussion on The Gathering, starting tomorrow, I don't really want to volunteer. But I'd join in with one....!

Anyone?

I'm sorry to be so out-of-step with everyone, but I did not particularly like Ella Minnow Pea. It was indeed quite clever; but clever does not necessarily make for good reading. Overall, I found it silly and a bit tedious, but thankfully short.

I checked this book and while I don't think I'll read it, I remembered that the letters Z and W are forbidden in Turkey as un-Turkish. These letters are used in the forbidden Kurdish language, for instance in the word newroz, the celebration of the spring equinox.
