What sad news! I have always meant to read A Wrinkle in Time, I'll have to find my DD's copy. Very nice obit, thanks for posting it.

Years ago I read the Wrinkle In Time series to my young children and really appreciated the spiritual tone to the books.

One of my very favorites is LOVE LETTERS. It is written for the mature reader but offer some of her best writing, in my opinion.

A Wrinkle in Time and its sequels are on my shelf so I read them about once a year or so. They are just wonderful.

My favorites are the Crosswicks Journals. The Irrational Season is my guide to the Church year, and I use it for my mass preparation quite frequently. I have found so many things in her books over the years that have become "personal truths", that I feel a true sadness about her death. Not like family, or friends, but I mourn a person who has made my life richer...and saner!

I've been trying to name my favorite from all her works, and I just can't do it. There is a poem she wrote about the Pieta...Mary after Christ's death...and how she is "just" a mother in that poem whose child has died. I work in a pediatric ICU...and that poem was to me what I see in the mothers' faces there. I showed it to a friend whose baby had died a few years before...and all she said after reading it was "yes".

L'Engle was a great story teller, but she also knew what story was about, and was able to get down to the basics that could touch people, make us think, and, if we were wanting to...to believe.

I think I wll be doing some rereading this weekend.

Another admirer of L'Engle here. I liked her more mature writings, have never read " A Wrinkle in Time." My favorite work describes her happy marriage, her life in the theatre, then later in small towns of New England: ""A Two Part Invention: Story of a Marriage."

I seem to recall that the now defunct "Victoria" magazine ran a feature on her thoughts some years back.

I only read her books when I was a child, but I enjoyed them very much then. I was vaguely aware that her writing extended into other arenas, but had not explored there. It sounds as though she brought enjoyment to many people, and provoked thought in others. Not a bad way to spend a life.

I read a Wrinkle in Time as a child but never really liked the book(s) until I was an adult.

I read A Wrinkle in Time when I was twelve and was the the first book my friends had also read that we could discuss. And we discussed it at length. One of my friends had a dream that told her that if the three of us went to bed with a fork under the bedsheets we would be transported into the L'Engle world, and we all wanted to go there. But by 12 we were already diverging into spiritual and rational worlds. I felt guilty for years about not putting a fork in my bedsheets and ruining our great adventures.

What is most awesome about her writings are how they transcend time, connect all ages, and teach us how to love. Whether the story she wrote was labeled as fiction, autobiographical, spiritual, religious, a young adult novel or for others, we could all read it, and learn a much needed lesson. She always wrote the truth.

Something that she wrote in her Crosswicks Journals, and quoted in "Walkng on Water: Reflections on Faith and Art," continues to calm me as I take my first real leap of faith into the unknown: "When we were children, we used to think that when we were grown up, we would no longer be vulnerable. But to grow up is to accept vulnerability...To be alive is to be vulnerable." I can only pray that by making myself vulnerable, I might have greater knowledge, wisdom, and capacity for being loved as well as loving others, a bit more like Madeleine L'Engle herself.

I think some of you may be reading A Wrinkle in Time. I know some of the later editions of this book contain a beautiful essay that discusses the historical / scientific context of the book. I've always liked this essay. I read AWiT when I was in 5th grade, and like Chris, I remember it most for the discussion it sparked amongst my circle of friends, in a way no other book had.
