In Wikipedia there is an article about the Douay Bible which says "Several American editions followed in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, prominently among them an edition published in 1899 by the John Murphy Company of Baltimore." James Gibbons Archbishop of Baltimore was created Cardinal in 1886, so since your edition specifically mentions him I would surmise it is the 1899 John Murphy Co version.

I grew up in the town where Noah Webster, writer of the first American Dictionary was born. His house -- which had been modernized and lived in since the 1700's -- was gifted to the town in the 1960's and stripped back to its original state. It is now a museum and, though tiny, well worth a visit. The largest city near me is Hartford, CT, which was home to both Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe, and both of their magnificent homes are now museums. The Twain house in particular is stunning. He wrote Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court while living in Hartford. Katherine Hepburn also grew up in Hartford, and as a child I used to vacation a town or two away from her shoreline home. Though I never saw her (and oh, how badly I wanted to!), I have seen her lovely home -- though only at a distance :) As for other literary connections, one of my college English professors was Oliver Butterworth, author of The Enormous Egg, a book I loved as a child. He was charming, delightful and a true gentleman.

I don't know that I get offended but I know what I mean when I say I built a house and I'm remodeling this one. In the first I designed it, borrowed a backhoe, graded the land, dug the foundation, built the foundation with some help, payed someone to pour the slab for the garage and the small part that was on a slab, framed it with some help, did all the electrical and all the plumbing, did all the exterior with some help, etc. I did hire somebody to do the roofing because part of it was 2-story and heights terrify me. I bought semi-custom cabinets. I paid somebody to dry-wall parts that weren't real wood, and paid somebody to lay the part that was wall-to-wall carpet. I did the hardwood flooring myself, installed all the doors and windows, etc. I paid somebody to install the garage doors. I bought pre made doors. 35 years later, I'm remodeling this one myself. EVERYTHING because the subs are way to much and/or incompetent. Everything, Including building the cabinets and much of the furniture. I'll have to pay somebody to do the roof because I'll be 70 by the time I get to that and it might just be too much work. I know I can find a competent drywall guy but finding a competent roofer worries me. I have lots of respect for someone that can design something that really works. I have lots of respect for somebody that can build something nice. Very little for somebody that pays for something to be built.

Well, we have more water than Mars! But if you look at pictures of our reservoirs and lakes, you could doubt it. ;) Is it definitive enough? Not completely. If you take the traditional religious view and only look within the traditional and rabbinical texts, then one would say, yes, that is the origin of the word as it is used in the American language. If you consider the scholarship outside of the texts (which is the tradition in my family over many generations--reverence for the texts as well as scholarly looks outside of them), given that for all our people have lost of our records over the centuries, we have a remarkable legacy of writings, and can date pretty well when and where the word "challah" first came into use for Shabbat bread, specifically the braid, then no. One can imagine that the Jewish women wanted to serve this lovely bread to their families for Shabbat, and rather than forbidding it, the rabbis codified it, imbued it with Jewish meaning, and decided it was challah with a ח, referring to the text, not Holla with a ה, since we don't recognize pagan gods. That has always been the way when cultures brush up against each other. Learning this has been a treasure for me. Instead of the challah being just one more thing we do, it makes a connection with a specific group and their generations before them, and I think it's very cool. As to Linda's daughter-in-law's family, I'm guessing "Holly", which is often heard, especially among older people, is a diminutive or a matter of phonetic drift rather than a reference to the goddess.
