Hi Rosefolly, Yep, I forgot about the objective "thee." And you're right, after "thou" was dropped from everyday use it was only used in situations like the King James Bible or in flowery, ornate writing: "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways." So to our modern ears it has an almost semi-sacred quality, but back in it's day it just meant "you" singular. Back when I was an English teacher (for a very short time), I'd start the Shakespeare unit by conjugating a verb: I have thou hast he,she it has we have you have they have The students who had taken a foreign language got it right away. In your other post, when you give the example of "I wish I were," you're talking about the subjunctive mood. French-and probably other languages too--uses it a LOT. English only retains it in isolated cases like that one. And as far as case goes, I think English retains it mainly, possibly only, with pronouns: I gave it to him. He gave it to me. She gave it to her. Who gave it to whom? The distinction between who and whom is slowly disappearing.

The quadrivium was comprised of arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and music. There you have the seven liberal arts. The Latin goes back to a meeting place of three roads and especially a place of public resort as they said. The adjective trivialis meant appropriate to the street corner, commonplace, vulgar. THe discourse in public places was and still is not usually of a very high caliber. The word trivial was first used in English in that sense in 1589. Shortly after that, trivial was used in the sense of something of little importance-less weighty than grammar, rhetoric, and logic. Poor people's basic needs are also taken care of here in America, through a myriad of programs and agencies from food to medical care to housing, but not everybody gets away from falling through cracks, and I think we all can attest to that, emergency shelters being the example. Someone needs to care for people until they can be integrated into programs. Not all indigent take advantage of them, either. Then there are those private charities, who wish to provide more than the bare bones necessities. Quilts are not your basic necessity, a synthetic blanket would suffice, but it's a luxury you'd like a poor person to be able to indulge in. I don't think anyone was trying to imply France did not have very adequate social programs. They are excellent, and some of them could set a good example for us in many respects. But all countries have homeless and needy, soup kitchens and shelters. I used to live in France, and know there are myriads of charities, both religious and secular. It's not a negative reflection on an industrial country, it's a positive reflection of their caring and humanity. My father was a life member of a social lodge in Paris who were active in charity work. Generosity is needed in every point of the world, not just developing countries. Do not feel bad that your quilt is going there, rather than someplace else, nor feel it isn't "needed".
