I was amazed at how some Star Lily Glads multiplied in their first year! Finally found the shriveled old bulb on the bottom of new one after they dried and twisted them off. I don't think they should be divided after only one year, correct? A few have side cormlets that are almost an inch from bottom to tip. Will those little side cormlets bloom in addition to the main new bulb? I'm assuming they need another year or two to develop internal bloom baby and then I divide them. The only reason I had the bulbs in my hot little hands because they had to be dug up since I was rearranging the bed for next Spring. I wouldn't even have known about twisting off the original corm if I hadn't read this forum. Thanks!

OMG!!!! Girl, those Teddy Bear Sunflowers are AWESOME!!! I have always wanted to grow some and someday I will. Your's are a sight to behold. Geez, I'm just amazed. Way to go. :O) About the Clematis... I'm starting to think that this policy of cool feet and hot head is an old wives tale to a certain extent. My best clematis grow from the north to the east sides of the house. Here is Haygley Hybrid (not blooming) with Claire De Lune in bloom. Northern exposure to the point that I have to remove moss from their feet to feed them. They get sun from 3 pm onwards and that's it. Haygley just finished blooming and the flowers covered the whole thing... I also have Ville de Lyon which is now 15 feet tall and blooming like there's not going to be a tomorrow. It gets sun until 11 am and then shade the rest of the day. The roots are underneath a veranda. Don't have a photo right now. These are my best performers here and cool moist feet is certainly THE thing. The shade they get is more like indirect light - there's no tree over them.

@Marge... SAR is a sweet looking creamsicle orange, very nice... and Aramis, nice bright cherry red. I actually got CA new this year. @Vickie... both suggestions really nice, especially Outrageous!! @Edward ... HAI is a really nice near white, which I thought I had already in Ice Carnival... but of course its one of the several I purchased from mail order thats either a TC or was mispackaged and sent out(actually so far out of 10 hems ordered from the same conpany, the only one thats come even close to what it should look like is the bicolor(orange petals with yellow throat and midrib with yellow sepals) landscaping hem, which actually looks good in front of the purple ornamental grass)... But I have learned my lesson from my mail order purchases... never to do so again

For sure, getting them watered MORNINGS is important to let the pollen and such stay on the blooms for night time visitors. ====>>> pollen doesnt work that way ... its only viable for a few hours... and degrades in heat very fast ... the ones that are viable.. any given night .. opened that afternoon ... i doubt it lasts over thru the next day.. and perhaps an indicator.. is that it has little scent left .. by the next morning .. i am guessing on that part... but it makes sense not to bother to lure in the pollinators.. if the pollen is dead ... being a species.. P should come true from seed ... but because it opens so late in summer ... there is not enough time for the pods to mature to viable seed .... for many of us the further north you go ... [90 days from 8/15 is mid-november.. and the plants are dead to the ground for me in MI ] ... some have tried cutting the stalks before freeze and trying to mature them in sugar water ... i lost interest at that point ... lol ... so ... if you wanted.. as your goal.. to add fragrance to your seedlings.. you 'take' pollen from P .... in the evening.. and somehow 'store' it.. to put on something else .. the next morning when those flowers are fresh .. ... [they used to use those black film canisters.. of which.. i bet you cant even buy them now ...] .. [for the truly crazed ... you try to store your pollen in august.. to put it onto those very early sieboldianas the following may.. i think it can be done in the freezer.. but again.. i lost interest at that point.. lol ...] BUT!!! ... being a species.. it would be time/effort wasted to put pollen of other things.. onto P .... it will not be accepted ... there.. more useless hosta knowledge ... i cant remember how old i am.. but i remember this stuff.. of course.. that might just be denial ... lol .. ken
