Shakespeare in the Park

Last Saturday, I went to the local community's presentation of "Romeo and Juliet". Put on at one of the parks we have here in town, it was a good product - the actors knew their lines, most projected very well and the distractions were minimal (although there were one or two children who I wish had been hauled away by their parents).

This is the first time that I have seen a Shakespeare play put on by an actual theater group in many years and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I had no idea that R&J had some funny bits in it and just enjoyed the whole experience. Now contemplating driving to a city south of here to see "Measure for Measure", depending on how far the city is.

Has anyone had one idea of Shakespeare only to have it vastly change when you see the plays live and on stage?

I could never really "get" his plays when I read them to myself even if I did it outloud, but to see it with actors made a huge difference.

Plus I had just finished the Shakespeare biography by Bill Bryson so maybe that made a difference...
