How do you find a stopping place when you read?

I was browsing one of the many (many!) book blogs out there and one discussion came up about how you find your stopping place when you're reading...

For me, I like to find either a gap between the paragraphs where there is a change in the direction of the story line, or at the end of a chapter if it's not too far away.

I get quite irritated if I have stop in the middle of a paragraph sometimes.

What about you? People on the blog admitted to all sorts of complicated manners to decide on a stopping place when they had the time... Do you?

Lemonhead, I'm with you. I prefer to stop at the end of a chapter, but a paragraph gap will do if I'm pressed for time (or about to fall asleep).

Hi, Ebby. I see why you want to know more about it-- the colors are exceptional. And the texture silky-shiny, which I always love. I checked OrchidWiz and the RHS, couldn't find anything. That's where it usually ends for me. However, my Wiz is not up to this minute. Sometimes breeders don't register something right away. I think there's a fee, and it can add up to big money if you're breeding lots of different things. So they wait, put it off (like we do sometimes with expenses). We finally cooled down a bit (were in 95-100 degrees last week), got a little rain too. I thought my daylilies were going to be done today with the exception of "Sears Tower" which is finally sending up 2 scapes, BUT I found some more 1st time scapes coming. Seems my MLa season bloomers will be Aug/Sept in this climate though it is very hard to tell since everything came from different zones in the spring and their bloom cycles are all mixed up this year. Mariachi, Prairie Tornado, and Carnival Flair look like I may actually see their faces this year after all. At least I might be able to collect pollen for next year. And I confess...still making a few impulsive crosses. Edward, I agree with gonegardening...I have a whole collection of pollen in the freezer for next year. When is your avg killing frost? okbt, 15 Sept is our avg first KILLING frost. We frequently have a few lighter frosts before that. Good to know about covering the pods with bags though. Petalpatsy, fairysoapgirl, I had to quit for a few days when it was hot like that too. I went out really early in the morning and could make a few crosses if the pollen was ripened but sometimes it just doesn't cooperate. Frozen pollen came out on a few days too. I'm already going through daylily withdrawals.

I shop at multiple stores. Pay day is every other Friday so I that is when I go to Wal-Mart or Smith's (Kroger owned). Every 2 weeks we also get coffee beans at the little mom and pop shop. We go to Sprouts every 2 weeks as their ads overlap on Wednesdays. This is actually getting less frequent as they have not put the bulk things on sale that I want the most as frequently (steel cut oats and short grain brown rice). The bread outlet is a once a month trip. Other stores such as Keller's (for meat), Trader Joe's, the international markets, Vitamin Cottage (for other bulk items), I alternate months. Some things I get through Amazon's subscribe and save and that can vary in frequency. Eggs are mostly from my hens and many of our vegetables come from our garden. Some of the variety in shopping is about the money savings but it is more along the lines of trying to match the quality to a certain price point and meeting my needs of acquiring a diversity of ingredients. Arborio rice at TJ's, quality meat at Keller's, red lentils in bulk at Vitamin Cottage, etc. Part of it is me trying to maintain a well stocked pantry because my moods are fickle and if the pantry has a variety of things, I can cook according to my mood. Pre-planned menus never, ever work for me.

My Ipad remembers where I stop but you can "bookmark" it yourself by tapping on the top right corner of the right side of the page. It puts a colored marker there for you. It also gives you the icons for enlarging the print there and changing fonts or looking for a particular word in the book.

I look to see how many pages until the next chapter starts. If it's too many for the time I have, I stop when I come to a logical break.

But no matter where I stop, when I pick up the book again, I usually have to scan the preceding page or so to put me back into the story, get me into the "groove."

I usually stop at a gap between paragraphs, I also wait for a page with the last line full stop. I have a pattern of facing my bookmark a certain way so that I am able to go to the right or left.

If I have to stop and there is no logical break, I do it at the end of the first paragraph on the left page. That way I don't have to reread to know where I quit.

I stop where it is convenient. I try to make it to the end of a chapter, but reading Terry Pratchett, who does not have chapters in most of his books, taught me to stop when there is a change of scene, usually indicated by a break in the text. If absolutely necessary, I finish the page I am on and start again with the first sentence on the next page.

I normally stop when the train comes into my station...so I've had to learn the fine art of being able to pick up from anywhere. I normally flip back a page and glance through it, and then just continue.

When I can choose when to stop, I look to see how far it is to the end of the chapter, and go for that if it is only a page or two. Otherwise I stop at the end of a paragraph when I feel I don't have to go on.

Carolyn, I like that idea, it would make picking up again easier.

Sometimes I get a feeling that the author stopped at a certain part of the writing. Perhaps a change of pace? That is a natural place to stop. (Actually, they just may have been interrupted!)
At night, I can fall asleep in the middle of a sentence and wake up with the book slipping under the covers! Normally, I try for the end of a chapter but there are some books that have to be read in one go. I recall an all-nighter with "The Godfather" after scolding my husband for doing just that! Totally un-put-downable.

I stop when the book falls from my hands and hits me in the face. Then I turn out the light.

I read to I come to a page that ends with a period. Then I mark the page with a bookmark, so I know where to continue reading.

Usually, nothing makes me stop except for my bladder. I'm retired and can do exactly as I please, most of the time. If I want to read until 4 AM, I do.
