Help for a Lost Poem

Ever have a song going through your mind that won't stop? Well, I'm having the same trouble with a poem but can't remember it all. I thought of this forum and hope someone else knows this poem. (I received no help from a web search.)

I believe the name is Rondo to Summer and the first line is "You thought it was a falling leaf we heard; I knew it was the summer's gypsy feet."

It is such a beautiful morning here with a touch of fall in the air. One golden leaf fell so it is no wonder that this poem came to mind.

RONDEL FOR SEPTEMBER

You thought it was a falling leaf we heard:
I knew it was the Summer's gypsy feet,
A sound so reticent it scarcely stirred
The ear, so still a message to repeat,Â
"I go, and lo, I make my going sweet."
What wonder you should miss so soft a word?
You thought it was a falling leaf we heard:
I knew it was the Summer's gypsy feet.

With slender torches for her service meet
The golden-rod is coming; softer slurred
Midsummer noises take a note replete
With hint of change; who told the mocking-bird?
I knew it was the Summer's gypsy feetÂ
You thought it was a falling leaf we heard.

That sounds like a neat gift! I am not good at poetry, but I was thinking you could just write "Happy Holidays" or "Enjoy your Winter Break" on the plate - that way they would know it is like a mini write and erase board.

Loves2cook, I missed it completely. Good thing, I'm not so poetic anyway! So you used all of the poems? Even LindaC's about the guy from Nantucket? (grin) I'm not too far from Chicago, just about straight across the Lake in Michigan. You missed out on a forum get together just a couple of weeks ago with Linda (doucanoe), Sherry (sheshebop, the poet), Peppi (who lives in Chicago) and me. That is truly beautiful. I have never read it before. It exactly captures this moment in time in New England--I was observing "the Summer's gypsy feet" as I drove home today. Thank you so much for sharing this.

That is truly one of the most beautiful poem I have read. I wish I had written something one tenth as good. I am surprised I haven't heard it before, it was new to me. This one is going right into my journal.

I had never heard of this poet so I looked her up online. Was surprised--because of the name--that she was a woman--and that she was from Texas, not a place I associate with the change of seasons. This poem makes me want to read more of her work, and there is a good biography as well.
