Reading in the Dusty Days of August

I've just finished Secrets of the Sea by Nicholas Shakespeare. It was a paper-back passed on by a friend otherwise I probably would not have chosen it.
Set in a remote one-horse-town in S Tasmania it is the story of a young couple, both with tragedy in their early lives, and their difficulties and success in running a farm and starting an oyster farm . . . something I had NO knowledge of.
The only part that jarred with me (something Carolyn brought up about a different book) was the casual way the young wife (in all other ways a 'respectable' young woman) had 'quick flings' with other men; it just seemed so out of character . . .but perhaps it is because the book was written by a man. Or maybe it is a sign that I'm getting old ;-)
