Bumblebeez- "I will admit that I hate the heat. 4 more months of this, yuck." You took the words right out of my mouth! It's a relief to know someone else feels that way! It seems almost unbelievable to most that there are people who don't really care for summer. I find summer to be neither lazy nor crazy, just kind of hazy! I like to go out early too--to do yard work, and run errands. Was out at 6:30 A.M. today to rake, water and tidy up. (Went out yesterday afternoon around 5:00 for an hour and almost passed out!) Got a solid hour of work done and really enjoyed being outside as the temp & humidity was fairly mild and low. Then all the "worms" came out...people walking (and talking!) I do enjoy talking to these people, and enjoy visiting with their dogs as well, but then I didn't get much done the remaining hour I was out. After 9:00, certainly 10:00, I can't work in the direct sun. I may try to go out again after 5:00. There's a finite period during which I can get things done outdoors during summer. Your idea of a trip to the beach in November sounds nice! People are expecting me at the neighborhood picnic this weekend. Eating outside in the noon-day sun when it's in the 90's is not my idea of a good time. I told one neighbor, "If they'd just have this thing in December, I'd love to go." She looked at me like I'd turned green and sprouted horns. I'm such a grouch. The "Grinch who stole summer!"

Your Rooguchi and Betty Corning are WAY ahead of mine.....waahhh! Mine are busy making humungous plants that are already too huge for their trellises, thanks to all the rain, and are still growing. I have no idea how beastly they will get before they actually start to bloom! They just get bigger & bigger every year. But aren't they just the BEST? I'm glad for you that daylily season is starting up. It's always so exciting to see the very first ones. I am finally seeing some scapes on the earlies way down in the foliage. Keep the photos coming!

Pippa, seeing that first bloom of SdlM has to be so exciting. It really is an exquisite rose when it's happy, although sad to say cool and wet climates such as Seattle are not to its liking. Sweet Frances (and yes, as Perma says it is a woman's name with the es at the end) has a fragrance that to me is not sweet but rather more in the myrrh group, which is not my favorite scent. However, Mme. Joseph Schwartz is right next to her, and its fragrance is sweet, one of the few tea fragrances I can actually detect. I don't require all my roses to smell sweet or necessarily to have a fragrance, but a garden devoid of fragrant roses would be a sad thing. Fortunately with Wild Edric, SdlM, Evelyn, Duchesse de Brabant and a few others, some of which have yet to bloom (Coquette des Blanches, Abraham Darby, Maggie), there is no danger of that. I am so grateful for the rains, which have given the garden a new lease on life, and me too when it comes to that. So much of me is wrapped up in the life and beauty of this piece of land.

Meme, I agree -- awesome! I love your flowers, and also how tropical it looks with all the foliage. I love seeing your helper too. Is he a Newfoundland? All three of mine probably would not weigh as much as he does! What's his name? Omar, my favorite crape myrtle is Acoma. I love them for their thick foliage, full blooms, smooth bark, and that they don't get as large as some. I had three, but the neighbor's oak trees got huge and put them in the shadows so they are declining. Well, actually they are pretty much gone, but Bob used the trunks to string lights on and they are trying leaf out, but they'll never be as pretty as they were in sunlight.
