Falling Man

Has anyone read this post 9-11 novel by Don DeLillo? It's about how the Twin Towers attack impacts an American family, and others in various ways, the narrator, Keith, being one of the survivors. A University class is being taught here on this book. Just wondered if you thought it worth seeking out; I've read several reviews of it.

I have not read this book but would be interested in anything Don DeLillo wrote as I am a big fan of his since college. Will have to read "Falling Man" now. He wrote "White Noise" and "Libra" which I loved but his book "Underworld" was my favorite. The only book I read about 9/11 was "The Looming Tower" by Lawrence Wright. I could get through it without crying. There is a famous photo called "The Falling Man" which leaves you with a terrible lump in your throat.

BG, thanks so much for your response. I have never read anything by DeLillo, but will have to look for his books. "Falling Man" sounds intriguing, from the reviews I read.

Well, I wasn't expecting that. Why? Because bermuda almost never gets fungal diseases, so I was really expecting St Aug. And without watering, what would cause the disease? Did you have prolonged snow cover this year? Are your spots shaded by trees or anything? What color is your car? (I'm obviously drawing a blank) Are the dead spots in low lying areas? I use organic products for fungus control. The one that works on almost everything is ordinary corn meal applied at a rate of 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Since it is also an organic fertilizer and otherwise harmless to pets and children, I would apply it over the entire lawn. If you try spot applications you'll end up with dark green spots where it fertilized and possibly dead spots where you had the disease but had not noticed it yet. You can apply corn meal any time of day or night, rain or shine. But don't expect to see fast miracles happen. It takes 3 full weeks to see greening coming back in. You will probably forget you applied by the time it greens up and then all of a sudden you'll notice it.

A 1 HP pump should give you 40-60 lbs no problem on 1.5" I would reccommend a very small pressure tank and a pressure switch to start and stop the pump. This way all you would have to do, is open a valve on the end where you connect the hose. This does not apply to underground sprinkler heads. There would be no reason for a tank / switch then.

Just to echo what gottagarden said...yeah, dont get a dog. Theres several annoying ones in our neighborhood that annoy everyone-BUT the owners. Theres one small dog that makes a god-awful whine-bark that sound like a rodent being strangeled. Try not to let what the neighbor said get to you. Trees cant help which way their DECOMPOSABLE leaves blow, and neither can you. Its not your responcibility to pick up after a TREE for goodness sake. There was a crotchety old guy next to us that was horrible. He made a huge stink about my row of various trees along the property line because they were a few inches over on his side. He threatened to take us to court over it. He never did, he was just blowing hot air. The trees wernt hurting ANYTHING! His house& driveway was nowhere near the trees, which he insisted we pruned nearly monthly. So we took out many of the trees and put a fence up. And wouldnt you know it, he moved away only a couple of years after that! Ps. have you baked her anything yet? because I have a great recipie for brownies with laxitives in it...;-) CMK

Give it a shot Jay. The stigma should be the green little stem thing in the middle of the flower. And the pollens looks easy enough to collect. You should try cross pollinating with different flowers if you have multiple open at the same time for best results but I think they are somewhat self fertile as jambus tend to produce lots of seedless fruits.

I didn't know it was a book. I saw a program about it on the Discovery Channel. It was very sad and chilling. How desperate he must have felt to make that choice.It's one of those life situations where I don't think you can really know what you would have done in the same circumstance. One likes to believe that we would always take the high road but would we? I have similar thoughts when I read about people doing extraordinary things in situations like WWII etc.

Deborah-From what I understand the falling man picture also played a part in "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" by Jonathan Safran Foer. I did not read the book yet and I think they are making a movie from it.

I just finished it. It sounded intriguing to me too. It was a difficult book to read and I read it in small bits. It was a morose look at two people's lives after 9/11. Maybe it was too hefty a dose of reality for me. I felt they were moving slowly in a dream, not quite alive any more. I wasn't drawn to either of them. I think it was more a psychological profile of how some people were changed. It was successful in enabling one to see what the longterm after effects were, the fallout that you can't see in pictures and newspaper articles and might not imagine.
While I am glad I read it, I would hesitate to recommend it to others. Look at the Amazon reviews if you wish and decide for yourself.
