Lynn So sorry for your stress. It brings back bad memories of my own stress dealing with landscape crews when we lived in an homeowners association. It took monumental effort to keep them out of my yard spraying poisons I didn't need and blowing debris from one side of the street and then coming back and doing it in the opposite direction. Result: air pollution with no positive results. I asked nicely, wrote letters, called and was assured it would never happen again and finally started yelling when more poison arrived without the legally proscribed flagging and/or notice. Threats about reporting them to state authorities finally worked because they would be fined and lose license. Sorry for the rant. I care deeply about poisoning the earth, it's animals and it's water. I now live in a non-HOA. The yardwork belongs to ME!!! Yay. Good luck with your roses, I think they'll make it. Give it a shot Jay. The stigma should be the green little stem thing in the middle of the flower. And the pollens looks easy enough to collect. You should try cross pollinating with different flowers if you have multiple open at the same time for best results but I think they are somewhat self fertile as jambus tend to produce lots of seedless fruits.

NYC window washer who fell 47 floors is awake, talking to family By DAVID B. CARUSO : Associated Press Writer 6:20 PM EST, January 3, 2008 NEW YORK - Doctors say they have never seen anything like it: A window washer who fell 47 stories from the roof of a Manhattan skyscraper is now awake, talking to his family and expected to walk again. Alcides Moreno, 37, plummeted almost 500 feet in a Dec. 7 scaffolding collapse that killed his brother. Somehow, Moreno lived, and doctors at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center announced Thursday that his recovery has been astonishing. He has movement in all his limbs. He is breathing on his own. And on Christmas Day, he opened his mouth and spoke for the first time since the accident. His wife, Rosario Moreno, cried as she thanked the doctors and nurses who kept him alive. "Thank God for the miracle that we had," she said. "He keeps telling me that it just wasn't his time." Dr. Herbert Pardes, the hospital's president, described Moreno's condition when he arrived for treatment as "a complete disaster." Both legs and his right arm and wrist were broken in several places. He had severe injuries to his chest, his abdomen and his spinal column. His brain was bleeding. Everything was bleeding, it seemed. In those first critical hours, doctors pumped 24 units of donated blood into his body _ about twice his entire blood volume. They gave him plasma and platelets and a drug to stimulate clotting and stop the hemorrhaging. They inserted a catheter into his brain to reduce swelling and cut open his abdomen to relieve pressure on his organs. Moreno was at the edge of consciousness when he was brought in. Doctors sedated him, performed a tracheotomy and put him on a ventilator. His condition was so unstable, doctors worried that even a mild jostle might kill him, so they performed his first surgery without moving him to an operating room. Nine orthopedic operations followed to piece together his broken body. Yet, even when things were at their worst, the hospital's staff marveled at his luck. Incredibly, Moreno's head injuries were relatively minor, for a fall victim. Neurosurgeon John Boockvar said the window washer also managed to avoid a paralyzing spinal cord injury, even though he suffered a shattered vertebra. "If you are a believer in miracles, this would be one," said the hospital's chief of surgery, Dr. Philip Barie. New York-Presbyterian has treated people who have tumbled from great heights before, including a patient who survived a 19-story fall, but most of those tales end sadly. The death rate from even a three-story fall is about 50 percent, Barie said. People who fall more than 10 stories almost never survive. "Forty-seven floors is virtually beyond belief," Pardes said. Science may never be able to explain what protected Moreno when the platform he and his brother were using atop an Upper East Side apartment tower broke free and fell to the ground.

Sorie, I agree with jdlaugh's comments. Often, how well an indeterminate performs in fall just depends on how stressed they were in spring and summer. If your indeterminates are pretty healthy in late June or early July, you often can cut them back (I cut them back really hard) and they rebound and produce well for fall. The weather has to cooperate too, though, because if the high temperatures hang on deeply into August or even into September, they may set fruit too late and it may not have a chance to mature. In that sense, fall tomatoes are a crapshoot, whether you're starting over with new plants or carrying over the old ones. I've done it all sorts of ways----some years I cut them back, some years I just remove damaged foliage and don't even actually prune them back. Some years, the tomato plants look like crap by July and I remove them all and plant new ones for fall. Some years I raise my own fall tomatoes from seed, other years I buy the plants at the store in late June or earliest July, and some years I just root cuttings from the healthiest of the spring plants that still look good that late in the season. Some years I do a combination of the above. I prefer to put my fall tomatoes in the ground a little earlier than OSU recommends, but this year I didn't get them in the ground until last week. This year, I staggered my tomato plantings over a very long time. I put the first tomato plants in the ground in the latter half of March and the last ones in the ground in the first week of May. I was trying to spread out the harvest so we wouldn't have so many at once, or at least so we'd still have plenty of tomatoes for fresh eating in July and August after the big main harvest and all the canning of the main harvest. So far, it seems to have worked. The 4 rows of plants that I put into the ground in March and April have produced huge yields. The three other sections of tomato plants that went into the ground in latest April or earliest May almost caught up to the earlier plants, producing their first ripe tomatoes 2 or 3 weeks later, but they still have lots of fruit on them that we'll be harvesting well into August. In the meantime, last week I cut back almost all the plants in those first 4 rows. They're already regrowing. I'd yank out any that don't recover well from being cut back. Then, I planted 9 or 10 new tomato plants for fall. You never know what you'll get from fall tomatoes. Since moving here in 1999, we have had our first hard freeze of winter as early as September 29th or 30th and as late as around December 16th or 17th. So, some years we get a lot more fall tomatoes than other years, but we're happy to have them, whether they are harvested in large numbers of small ones. Most years, if I cover up the tomato plants well and get them through the first freeze, we often won't have another freezing night for another month or two and they'll live long enough to produce lots of fruit. jd, What other ones did you get? You know that enquiring minds want to know! I simply picked up plants at Home Depot last week and so was sort of stuck with their mostly-hybrid plants. I got Early Girl, BHN 602, Phoenix (a heat setting type that even set fruit for me in July and August of 2011 when nothing else was blooming, much less setting fruit), Bonnie Original, Cherokee Purple and Black Krim. Even though they were fairly young transplants, they're tolerating this heat wave really well. Dawn
