Have you ever recognized yourself in a book?

Reading HUMAN CROQUET by Kate Atkinson and came across this .....which made me laugh out loud :

".. Eunice's brain is modelled on a reference library....holding an unneccessary amount of facts, a clinical retrieval system and an advice desk that won't shut up."

I had cringe a bit and admit that it pretty much described the me that I know and love !

I'm afraid I don't remember the title, but I once read a book with a main character who bore my own name. Not so unusual, but her dog also shared a name with mine. It was a bit creepy.

'What To Say When You Talk To Yourself'? - Have You Read It???

Yes, Arum, I read it several years ago... great book... it really gets to the meat of the matter about the internal dialogue we all have with ourselves every day, almost every waking minute when we're not talking with someone else or actively mentally engaged in something else. The simple act of learning to think "I'm a capable person and I can do what I set out to do, etc.," rather than "I'm such a loser and nothing ever goes right for me," and so forth, can have a powerful impact on how successful we are in our daily lives. I probably need to go back and read it again, though, as I've fallen back into some of the old, bad habits. Enjoy the book and try to apply what it says. I highly recommend it. Jeff

Have you ever done this after reading a book?

Yes, totally forget...movies too. I never understood people who could recite passages from books or movies they watched years ago. There are some that stick out in my mind, though. The other day I was reading a book about animals that start killing all the humans they come into contact with, including peoples' pet dogs. I got up in the middle of the night to use the restroom and there is my dog, Chewie, who sleeps up against my door. He gave me a weird look and it kind of creeped me out. lol. Went to the bathroom, got back in bed and started reading again, but apparently when I put my shoes up that night I didn't close the door to my closet all the way. I remembered a Stephen King story called "The Boogyman", it starts with a closet that's cracked open just a little. Well, I had to get up again and close that dang door. I read that story when I was a teenager and it still creeps me out. I'm 53 now and cannot sleep with a closet open. I don't remember most of the story but I do remember it wasn't good for the characters in it. I may have to reread it just for the fun of it. It was from "Nightshift"...a bunch of short stories and I used to own it. I'm now reading one of his son's book of short stories, "20th Century Ghosts". Not sure I like him as much as his father.

Do you ever treat yourself to something outrageously expensive?

Oh. Well, in that case Bumblebeez, you'll have to sell them all and hope that DC meant white truffles and Beluga. :) Of course, the Birkin was styled after a bag that a lady was carrying on a plane. It's an expensive knock off. :) My mother had one of the original kind, or a cheaper knock off of that.... :) Special requirement foods, like kosher or organic or both, which are for philosophy rather than need, are expensive, but they're another story. It's an overall choice to spend a larger portion of one's wherewithal to get a specific kind of groceries that fit one's way of life. While my university made me learn to hate broccoli (I've gotten over it and can eat it, but won't buy it for myself) because there was a bumper crop and we had horse broccoli 3-4 times per week because it was cheap, a lot of universities now are following student insistence on sustainable agriculture and grown within 100 miles. It's expensive, though they save some costs by going right to the farmer, but they do manage to stick to budgets while feeding the young people according to their philosophy. Some have few clothes and many second hand in order to pay for their food philosophies. That's all about way of life, rather than indulgence of the buy oneself a treat variety.

I wouldn't go so far as to say I recognized myself, but at the time I read Anne Tyler's novel, Back When We Were Grownups, I certainly did share a lot of feelings and attitudes with the main character, Rebecca Davitch. I remember when she expressed the thought that she was living the wrong life, in a strange way I could relate to that - just had never thought of it that way before.

Well, I know you don't mean it this way, but a photo of me appeared on the cover of a book once. Fortunately the photographer called to warn me. I wandered downtown and saw "me" staring back on a big display stack of the title in the bookstore window. It was creepy.

Growing up I identified strongly with Harriet the Spy although I was a midwestern and not New York child. I spent my youth spying on people, cynical before my time, and taking notes on everything :) The two things I was mystified about were: that Harriet had a governess/caretaker (Miss Golly) and egg creams (never had heard of them; still don't really know what they are).
