bookmom -- I finally finished this book -- we moved on June 30th. And here's what i thought about the ending pffffft! That's a big raspberry.

SPOILER ALERT

I was so intrigued in the beginning. Then I thought it dragged and was repetitive in the middle. I knew early on that it was "Ben," but was surprised by the outcome. I did feel, though, that the ending was really forced and hurried. Claire just said that Mike had died in the fire(?), but didn't explain how Christine had survived.

Overall, not a bad book for a first novel, though. What did you think?

Actually HTML markup doesn't work in titles on this forum. When you type in angle brackets, they convert to parentheses, which I suspect is what Sarah Canary did.

'So they ARE Blackberries! .......... and I doubt the fruit will make up for it....I don't like Blackberries, and neither does my husband :( But, Kathleen.......read it again. Those ARE raspberries, not blackberries. Two different animals. But, they're black raspberries instead of red raspberries. They go for $7.95 a PINT here in the stores. They can/do grow wild, but for every one hundred wild blackberry bushes on my property I have one black raspberry. I bought a few this year and am busily propagating them to plant out to increase my little hoard of them. They make one of the best pies and jellies, ever. Now RASPBERRY I could have lived with. But this plant is crazy invasive. And, we were here the beginning of July (we are in southern Ontario), and saw no berries :(

The first thing I made Brian do when he got home tonight was read these posts. That and the fact that I had gutted the dining room, seemed to do the trick. While he still hasn't risen to my code red level of excitement, he no longer thinks I've gone mad. I took four bids over the past two days and hired a contractor this afternoon. The rub was that he had a tight window. This project will be done by Monday. So I skipped out of work two hours early and flew into action. The contents of the dining room (and there were many) have been safely moved. Although the rest of our house looks like a giant flea market tonight...that dining room is clean. Contractors are a mysterious bunch. I'm not used to them, seeing as though I'm accustomed to doing the work myself. I was quoted a range between $800 and $1,800 (one laughable bid came in at $3,000 but that's another story). It turns out the guy who quoted $800 came with the most experience and recommendations. He was the busiest too. He's in the process of restoring the exterior of a Victorian here in town. I took an immediate liking to him. Let's hope my gut instinct pays off. I had a co-worker ask me this morning if I had it all over to do, would I buy this particular house. It really gave me pause. This property needed so much work. So many bad choices had been made over the years. We went blindly in thinking they were all easy fixes. But the answer was yes. I would do it again. This house deserved her face lift. Minnie ~ that's a beautiful poem. abiroo and Danielle, my heart is breaking for you. Losing your furbabies is like losing a part of yourself. It was one year ago this month that we returned our beloved Teddy to our maker and 6 months for Bear. The pain is still there, but some happier memories are mingling with the sadness now. Rest in peace dear Oliver and Abbey. June ~ did you ever post about your grandson? If you did, I somehow missed it. Many heartfelt hugs to you for the tremendous loss of your precious grandson. Linda

Personally -- I really like the half wall. If you also really like it, it shouldn't be a big deal. Having extra space to place things against (in my own case, lots of books) can be helpful. I also don't like "floating furniture", or rolling walls (sounds so temporary!) or the like. Your second design works better than the original, although I'm wondering if that peninsula is a bit overpowering. Maybe have it approach from the right rather than the left? Or, better yet, try an island? If a lot of people hang out in your kitchen, having access on either side of an island would probably help traffic flow. I do like the master in the back -- but a lot will depend on your preferred morning light. (I made sure mine won't face east, for instance -- I'll be retired and won't have to wake with the chickens...)

s_c, describing the ending as "forced and hurried" pretty much sums up my thoughts also. I went back and forth about whom might the villain be--Ben, her doctor, possibly noone at all if the ultimate twist was Claire had more issues than just memory loss. :) I think the ending was weak and parts did get repetitive although that might have been the writer's intent since that daily repetition was key to the storyline. It bothered me the way the character of Mike just suddenly flattened out and cracked in comparision to how calm and in control he was in most of the book. Good first try, would have been better with a more thoughtful ending.

I've been reading more of these twisty psychological thrillers lately than I'm proud to admit.. but this book reminded me of the Nicci French books I've read, also maybe Lisa Unger. If you need something light and fluffy after your move (exhausting?) What Alice Forgot is another memory loss novel in the chick lit vein. Good luck with the unpacking--that part takes me eons.

You're right, Rosefolly. I think I tried it once before and it didn't work -- but I forgot that. And not to worry, Lemonhead. I didn't take it as snotty, just helpful.

Bookmom -- I thought the same thing about the repetition, but it still got a little old. And I agree about Mike's rapid decline. But wasn't there a mention earlier in the book about her having a bruise, but due to no memory she couldn't say how she got it?

I agree that a more thoughtful ending would have been good. I'll look into the Alice book. Meanwhile, still unpacking and unpacking and unpacking. Ugh.

Yes, I think at the end of the story when Claire found the pages of her journal which Mike had sliced out, it explains the bruise on her head which occurred when Mike knocked her over. He did it after Claire told him she'd read the letter from Ben, thinking Mike was Ben. What really surprised me was how it turned out that she'd only been living with Mike a short amount of time, only a few months as I recall. Ugh, I will say this story gives me the creeps.

I agree -- creepy. And I wonder how the staff at Waring Manor could just let her walk out with the guy and not check ID or anything.
