I loved Memoirs of a Geisha, Women of the Silk. What can you reccomend on the same idea as those two favorites?

I've really enjoyed Gail Tsukiyama's books. Did you know the sequel to Women of the Silk is "The Language of Threads?" She also wrote another absolutely wonderful book called "The Samurai's Garden."

What about these books appealed to you? China, Asia in general? Coming of age? The vastly different experiences? The story centering about women? You might like Pearl Buck's books, especially "The Good Earth." Rohinton Mistry's books like "A Fine Balance" and "Family Matters" take place in India and deal with family dynamics and describe a startingly different culture (at least for me.) Right now, I'm reading Andrea Levy's "Small Island" which so far is about Jamaican immigrants in England after WWII.

I am looking forward to hearing some other recommendations, too and I swear I am going to start keeping a list to take to the library with me.

I have read Gail Tsukiyama's other books, and loved them all. I also love "THe Good Earth". I think I love visiting other countries by the way of books. You do learn so much about other cultures. I also enjoyed "The Secret Fan".

I like adventure books like this too and hope to read Overboard eventually. Thanks for recommending it. I enjoyed the Shackleton book, trapped on the ice in Antarctica for months. "Endurance" is one of several books about this true story. Did you ever read "Into Thin Air?" (Krakauer) "Adrift: Seventy-six Days Lost at Sea" is another you might like. Gary Paulsen wrote "Hatchet," a book for younger readers but definitely held my interest. Another he wrote is "Winterdance" about his experience in the Iditarid dog sled race in Alaska. If you like dogs, you'll enjoy this book a lot. If you go over to the Gardening forums, there is a group called "Books and Reading." The people there could probably offer many suggestions. Looking for large print books

Thank you carolynouky, I know about that book club, but as I hope not to have this vision problem forever, I have been looking towards libraries and used books ....So far Amazon.com has been my best bet, but I was wondering if all you other readers out there had any other ideas. I have done a Google search, but I'm wondering if anyone here has personal experience! I know I can buy almost any book in large type, but I love to pass books on (it's just a thing with me - I want others to enjoy as well) and I do not know any one who reads these large print books. Hoping to hear from more of you... Elly

Lawrence Sanders has a series of books featuring his gad-fly detective Archie McNally, they are dated now, Sanders died in 1998, but they are funny and easy reading, def fall into the "pre-cell phones" genre. Bonus: many are available at thrift shops and other cheap places to get good reads. J.A. Jance, her series is set in Arizona and pretty good as well (definitely not as funny as Sanders tho). Some are pre-cell, some newer. Ditto on the thrift shop option. Carl Hiaasen, his novels aren't a series per se, but contain some recurring characters, as a bonus, he skewers South Florida and its denizens, capturing it perfectly (I traveled there quite often in the day, and know it well). TBH his earlier book are the funniest, but I read everything he writes, I appreciate his wit and humor. Some pre-cell, some newer. Joseph Wambaugh, a retired cop, who has written some really good, and funny, crime books (yeah, humor is very important to me), all pre-cell, I think. David Simon and Ed Burns, the creative duo who brought us the Earth's best TV show, The Wire, are both authors of true crime books, tho not necessarily whodunits, more like sprawling, sad, true-to-life stories, just like their TV shows.

That's no hahnii Russ, See the brown edges on the leaves. Showing the juvenile leaves not to resemble the mature leaves in a lot of species. Interesting to see what you get. My Seibert doesn't show much lighter stripe in center at all. Most don't show any. So far no strange pups from it, only regular hahnii looking ones. Lady who gave it to me did have some Solid Gold pups from the main plant that she gave me this from. I do now own two plants from different Gold Hahnii that produced Solid Gold for me. I have to keep them warm thru our winter months. Most fussy plant so far. My albino pup from a Gold Hahnii leaf has some faint green in it and hoping that is enough to help it survive. Going on one year soon so it is the oldest one so far that I was about to keep. Sort of looks like the one Chris gave me called "Philippine". New leaves look albino/yellowish then darken with green with age. Extremely nice hahnii. I have to keep that one warm with extra lighting to keep it alive. So far so good. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See was wonderful, and I plan to reread it soon. I also liked Balzar and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Dai Sijieby.

I like The Ginger Tree by Oswald Wynd. A young Scottish girl goes out to China to marry a nerd and falls in love with a Japanese man.

If you are interested in India, Vikram Seth's big novel, A Suitable Boy is very good. It's one of my all-time favorites.

"A Daugher of the Samuri" by Etsu Inagaki Sugimoto. First published in 1926. This woman was one of the last generation to be raised in the old ways, of feudal Japan -- then was sent to the United States as a young woman.

I love books like this, that draw us in to the old ways, before the pace of change picked up at the turn of the last century.
