I have three rose books that I don't need anymore. David Austin's English Roses by David Austin, 100 English Roses for the American Garden by Clair Martin, and The Graham Stuart Thomas Rose Book. The weather sucks and I thought there are people who do NOT have a spray free garden and would like some books on English roses. The books are wonderful with great pics. If someone wants them just email me and you can pick them up. I thought about shipping but thought I would start of local to save myself the trouble of packing and the post office. When I first read your message, I missed the part about wanting a book about vegetable gardening. I gardened in the Chicago area for many years, and my overall favorite book was The Well-Tended Perennial Garden: Planting and Pruning Techniques by Tracy DiSabato-Aust. For vegetable gardening, I always used the "Victory Garden" by Crockett, or "The New Victory Garden" by Thompson. Alas, these books are only available as used books or for very high prices as new books. I noticed a book recently published - Guide to Illinois Vegetable Gardening by James Fizzell. While I have not read the book myself, he is very well-regarded. He was the horticultural advisor to the University of Illinois Extension for 35 years. The University of Illinois Extension is a valuable resource. They had various locations across the state, (I've been gone for 4 years, not sure if they still have them.) Anyway, you could call for advice. If you had a particular plant or plant pest problem, you could visit the extension office to have the problem diagnosed and treatments suggested. I really miss the taste of homegrown Illinois tomatoes and also the taste of sweet-corn. The soil around Chicago is very heavy soil, with lots of clay, so you need to add lots of peat moss or other organic matter to lighten it. However, it is also very rich soil. Unfortunately, some of the best farmland in the country is now under concrete in the suburbs around Chicago. I wish them luck in their new location. Where are they from? Perhaps the conditions are not as dissimilar. My top advice: 1 Peat moss and other organic matter 2 Water tubes around tomatoes in the spring (I think Burpee or Parks sells them) 3. Mulch the garden - weeds also grow very well in the rich soil 4 Old sheets or blankets for the fall - you can sometimes get 3 weeks more growth in the fall if you cover your tomatoes during an early frost. I think the average first frost date is October 15.

By Morton Keller The American colonies were not like those in other parts of the world. Royal governors came to plunder but found that American planters and merchants could not easily be bossed around. Sir Danvers Osborn, a Briton who was made governor of New York in 1753, was so upset when the New York assembly refused to support him in the style he felt his rank deserved that he asked: "Then what am I come here for?" At which point he hanged himself. Morton Keller, a history professor at Brandeis University, likes to take the long view. Other chroniclers of American history talk of "ages" (Reform, Gilded, Jazz etc) that lasted no more than a decade or so. Mr Keller sees continuity where others see helter-skelter change. "Americans like to think of themselves as a people eternally young. But the reality of our public life is very different," he writes. The constitution, rarely amended, is nearly a quarter of a millennium old. America's legal system and political parties are among the most durable anywhere. Even in the revolution against King George and his pesky emissaries, Mr Keller sees not a clear-cut break with the past but "the product of nearly two centuries of colonial experience", in which the settlers took old-world ideas of liberty and expanded them. Mr Keller has somehow crammed the entire political history of the United States, from the first colonists until nearly the end of George Bush's presidency, into a single slim volume. He is breezy without being glib, and original without being eccentric. He divides American history into three regimes (as in ancien régime): "Deferential-republican", running from early colonial times until the 1820s; "Party-democratic", from the 1830s to the 1930s; and "Populist-bureaucratic", from the 1930s on. In the first regime, Americans clung to European notions of hierarchy even as they created a new andÂfor the timeÂunusually democratic form of government. Ambitious young men during this period, such as George Washington and Alexander Hamilton, adopted the manners of the elite. Hamilton even fought a duel.
